Elements 6 takeover
Hi
I am getting used to Elements 6 - but - I can't seem to find out how to disable it as my default download. I am more than happy with my Canon download (which kicks off at the same time) I find that the Elements does not save RAW to the 'my photographs' file on my laptop. Any advice gratefully received! Nellie

Re: Elements 6 takeover
You'll probably find that Adobe Downloader is set to run at startup. There may be an icon for it in the system tray (bottom right). Not sure about the next bit... you may be able to disable it by clicking on the icon and changing the preferences, or by removing it from the Startup folder, or by running msconfig from the C> prompt and choosing which apps are loaded at bootup.
Need help from someone else here because I don't have it.

Re: Elements 6 takeover
You should be able to stop this from happening. Might be an option in 'preferences', or you might be able to tell Windows which app to use.

Re: Elements 6 takeover
Otherwise... Start > Run > type in: msconfig > click on the Startup tab
You should see Adobe Photo Downloader listed with a tick against it. If you click to remove the tick, it won't load at boot.

Re: Elements 6 takeover
It's an option within Elements. Run the organiser and select 'Edit->Preferences->Camera or Card Reader' then uncheck the 'Auto Launch Adobe Photo Downloader on Device Connect' option.
I used to be very happy with the Canon downloader until I got my 10D. It doesn't work with Vista and Canon do not plan to correct that so I gave up and use the Adobe downloader for both my camera. |

Re: Elements 6 takeover
Larne, surprised that Canon seem to have dropped support for 10D. I have a 20D and downloaded all the Camera software again for my new computer (Vista) and found nice shiny new Canon software which does all it did before and probably more. I only use it to transfer images from my camera to my hard disk and use the Bridge from then on. I have never used the Adobe downloader because it cannot handle Raw files in the camera though I guess it can for the card reader. I now have a decent card reader on my new computer so I could reconsider whether to use the Adobe downloader.

Re: Elements 6 takeover
I checked a couple of locations and Canon have formally said that they have no plans to produce Vista drivers for the 10D. I guess the camera is 15 years old now but yes, I was disappointed.
As I recall the Adobe downloader has no problems downloading RAW direct from my 400D but as I can't be bothered to use two different routes I just use the card reader for both cameras now. |

Re: Elements 6 takeover
Time flies but not that fast!
![]() The 10D was superseded by the 20D around October 2004 - less than 4 years ago. It is a little worrying how quickly 'old' cameras are forgotten by manufacturers and software companies. When will they stop supporting 10D RAW files?

Re: Elements 6 takeover
Oops - where did that extra '1' come from?? Yes, 5 years is of course what I meant
![]() Let's hope that the software companies don't decide to drop anything they already have. The translation for the 10D isn't going to change so they just need to keep it in there but I guess I wouldn't put money on it staying there forever. I hope to upgrade my 400D at some point at move the 10D into 'second body' status. If I ever get to the point where the latest version of software no longer supports the 10D I guess I can always keep an older version on another computer and just use it to convert from RAW to TIFF. Let's hope we don't get there anytime soon! |

Re: Elements 6 takeover
Couldn't agree more, and then there's the added complication that older software may not run under Vista, and.... all of a sudden, negatives seem like a really good idea.

Re: Elements 6 takeover
Having just bought a new computer running Vista, I was concerned about this issue myself but I did check in advance as to what hardware/software was supported. Canon did upgrade the camera software for Vista and my 20D was still supported. I was pleased about this as the canon software did seem smarter and more features but I hardly use any of them. However, it was disturbing to find that the 10D is dropped as the 20D must be next. Of course you can continue to run the old software providing the O/S does not change.
The Epson website suggested that Vista would support printers going back as far as the 1200 so I assumed all would be fine for my trusty old 1270. What epson failed to mention was that there is a set of Vista printer drivers supplied by Microsoft but they are not the same as the original Epson drivers. The results were appauling with colours runing into each other and a colour cast. My 1270 is now connected to my wife's computer which runs XP and all is well again on the printing front. |

Re: Elements 6 takeover
Know that feeling. I have a HP Officejet 5510 and when I upgraded to Vista the colour prints went really dark. Turns out this is a known problem with the Microsoft drivers provided for the printer within Vista. The answer on the HP website...? Allow us to show you a list of our products you could upgrade to if you want something that works properly with Vista - which takes you to a list of new printers
