Help with cats eyes

Does anyone know how to get cats eyes looking how they should in photoshop? I have an old photo of a Siamese cat I used to own (before I understood the basics of photography and totally un-edited before anyone starts pointing out the obvious!), but cannot work out how to get the lovely deep blue eyes back. Red eye tool doesn't work (maybe because they're yellow as opposed to red ). If anyone feels up to a challenge, please be my guest, and tell me how you did it..

I used the red eye reduction tool in Paint Shop Pro X Then used freehand masks to selectively reduce the gamma for each eye to darken them and bring up the blue.

It doesn't begin to do those wonderful eyes justice though. The best thing with red eye is to avoid it in the first place.
