How do I take away shadow?
Hi all,
I have put a pic in my members gallery, as I was not sure what to do. It is from my Sister in Laws wedding last week. It was the first time I have tried my Olympus E-300. I had fun, but no idea what I was doing. I took over 600 photos! The one in the gallery is an example of my problems, and they are many. But the first thing I would like to do is find out how to get rid of the shadow. Can anyone help please? I have downloaded Gimp, and would try others if recommended. Thanks. Matthew

Re: How do I take away shadow?
You can show the image in this thread by either copying the bottom line of code under the full sized picture in your gallery and pasting it into the text in your post, or browse to it by clicking on the right hand (camera) icon in the line of icons along the top of the text entry box. When you see the image you want to post, click on it and the code will appear in your text.
Looking at the image I guess you used the on-board flash on your camera, so the way to prevent shadows being thrown on the wall is to either move the subjects away from the wall, or if you had a flashgun with a tilting head, bouncing the flash from the ceiling if it was low enough would also give you a shot with no shadow. A third alternative is to use different camera settings and not use the flash at all. The only way you can remove the shadow now is by post processing with an image editor, and the clone tool can clone the background with no shadow over the shadow areas. However, this is difficult to do and will probably not give you the result you hoped for. Far better is to hone your skills so the shadow is not there in the first place , but the best way to learn is to make these errors and you will always be aware of this in the future.

Re: How do I take away shadow?
Thanks for that.
I was in a bit of a difficult position as I was best man. No time to manipulate my position or theirs. I think I will have to invest in a separate flash. Do you have any suggestions. I agree that a big part of this for me will be trial and error. I might see if I can join a local photography club, to get some hands on advice, or maybe a local college course. Thanks again. I'd not rush into it though, do your research and then see if there are any used units going that will reduce your costs. People often upgrade flashguns and they are usually very reliable and will give years of use. |
