Mono critique, please.

Ok the photo is pretty average and just one I picked to work on. However, your thoughts on the conversion would be appreciated. TFL and TIA.

Re: Mono critique, please.

That's lovely! The only suggestion I would make is that the oilseed rape (??) could be a deeper yellow? The contrast with the mono of the rest of the shot would be stunning.

Re: Mono critique, please.

I really like this. The sky, clouds and background treeline seem a bit flat, a bit close in tone. A bit more tweaking and it will be better still.

Re: Mono critique, please.

Thanks for all feedback -

Angela - yes you're ight it's not the deep yellow of rape but I wanted a shade of yellow which fitted in.

Dabhand - I agree the sky particularly looks a little flat.

Gary - thanks for the encouragement.

Re: Mono critique, please.

I've looked at your image again, now later and the natural light in my study is lower, and it looks better!! Could be that if you tweak the bits in question you'll have not just o good picture, but a great one.

Re: Mono critique, please.

I'm no expert in Mono conversion so i'll just go along with others... but I will say that it's a lovely simple composition and work's all the better for it, very nice shot

Re: Mono critique, please.

To be perfectly honest? Not keen on it - soz! The yellow's too pale and not sure if selective colouring would suit that well (too much yellow?). As suggested, the mono's flat and could do with some attention to Levels

Composition looks good tho!

Re: Mono critique, please.

Clever conversion there Stephen. If you are after a more hi key look to shot, with the greys etc, rather than deep blacks I would recomend the following :-
- Use the Dodge tool for highlights at say 3-5% & bring out white in the clouds.
- Use a White backround for border instead of black...as the black accentuates the greyness of shot & makes it look flat.

Re: Mono critique, please.

I added a curves adjustment layer to bring out the contrast in the clouds. Painted on the mask so that the yellow wasn't affected by the curves.

Have absolutely no idea how to upload it so you can see the changes tho sorry!

Re: Mono critique, please.

Thanks Heidi...and welcome to Pixalo I like the way you've increased the contrast which IMO is better. Not keen that the clouds are now a bit blown but I appreciate your interest.
