Photomatix and ICC Help!

Have tried two HDR images in Photomatix and then, after tone mapping, tried to open them in CS2 for final adjustment but told that the ICC profile is invalid. Would appreciate advice.

Re: Photomatix and ICC Help!

from the photomatix FAQ...

Quote:
How does your software handle color profiles?

Photomatix processes the RGB values of your source images directly, without converting them to another color space. This means that the resulting images produced by Photomatix will be in the same color space as the one specified by the ICC color profile of your source images.
When a color profile for the source images is available, Photomatix embeds it into the resulting tone mapped or combined image.
Please note, though, that in the case of a tone mapped image, the color profile can only be passed through if the Generate HDR and Tone Mapping steps are done in the same session. If you have first saved the HDR image file as Radiance or OpenEXR, then the ICC profile information will be lost, and the Tone Mapping step won't know the color profile anymore. In this case you will have to assign the color profile of the original source images to the tone mapped image yourself.
Additionally, Photomatix Pro is color managed for the display as well. This means it will show the correct color values based on the ICC profile of the image and the color profile set as display profile for your monitor.
On Mac OS X, the display profile is set under System Preferences->Displays->Color.
On Windows, it is under Settings->Control Panel->Display->Settings->Advanced->Color Management.

Re: Photomatix and ICC Help!

Thanks for that Orangepeel. However what the Photomatix FAQ says is exactly what I did. One session convert and combine from CR2 in Photomatix then tone map and finally save as Tiff. Problem does not arise if I first convert to Tiff in DPP then combine the Tiffs. this however slows the whole thing down by adding another procedure.

Re: Photomatix and ICC Help!

Hi there,

Are you combining in photoshop first, then tone mapping in photomatix??

Try this - Convert your raws (if thats what you are using, adjust white balance, and whatever else you need to.....) using ACR, Capture NX, Capture One, etc..... Do not adjust exposures!!!!!

Save each raw as a Tiff (16bit if you want the best possible graduations). Import ALL Tiffs into Photomatix (it may ask you for exposure and / or profile settings; these sometimes get lost on the way, don't know why......)

This will combine your images, then tone map the HDR that is generated in Photomatix.

After all this (it doesn't really take that long.....) save as another tiff for use in photoshop.

Hope this helps a little

Cheers,

Primer

Re: Photomatix and ICC Help!

Thanks Primer. That is the way I have been converting. However since replacing my Hard Drive and reinstalling CS2 and the latest Photomatix the problem seems to have solved itself.

Re: Photomatix and ICC Help!

When combineing images in photomatic or PS, I have noted that the 32 bit files have a differing color when opening in the two programs. I have combined in photomatic and then tone mapped in PS,,combined in PS and then tone mapped in photomatic. I always save the 32 bit file and have gone back and tone mapped differently. Just thought I would mention that I feel photomatic seems to over power the reds. Make sence ,, This is the time of year I like to shoot hdr,,,so have fun Roger and share some shots.
