River Ouse at Dusk
Another shot from my recent visit to York. This one was taken from the balcony of the hotel bar, just south of the Ouse Bridge, and looking south towards Skeldergate bridge.
The amazing Sigma 10-20 was used at 10mm.

Re: River Ouse at Dusk
Now that is wide.
I borrowed one of these for a few shots last week, you have to be careful not to get your ears in the shot

I always love what the 10mm end does to the clouds in the sky. They work even better in Mono
Quick & dirty just to show effect :-![]() Keep meaning to look at investing in a polariser to get deeper blues, which then convert to deeper blacks for the mono conversion |

Re: River Ouse at Dusk
I like this shot, almost terrifyingly wide. One thing I would be tempted to do though, and seeing as we are in the manipulation forum, is to heal out that one bar going across the wall to the right of the pic. Can't try it now as I am on the laptop, with no photo stuff installed on it, but just a thought!

Re: River Ouse at Dusk
The thing that bothers me here is the wide angle distortion. It looks like all the structures are sliding toward the center and will eventually swirl down the drain!
Is that the effect for which you were trying? If so, in my opinion, it is a bit too severe and easily fixed with pscs2 ![]() skip |

Re: River Ouse at Dusk
Hi Skip - I'm not sure if it is new lens euphoria, but I quite like the converging verticals. in some shots (not necessarily this one) I think it adds drama to the image.
Using the lens distortion tool in CS2 takes so much from the top of the image, unless you have anticipated it and left a lot of space in the top of the frame, it can't do more than correct smaller distotions. In this, and a lot of the other shots I took in York, the lens was used at 10mm due to space restrictions, and I agree that the converging vertcals are extreme, but I quite like the effect. Here is another shot of York Minster, first as shot, then with two stages of correction. You can see the effect of cropping, but I admit I could have placed the Minster lower in the frame, but I was trying not to tilt the camera up too much as this would have made the converging verticals worse than they are here. I guess you will have to humour me for a while until I get it out of my system!

Re: River Ouse at Dusk
Hey Graham
I certainly see the difference and the cropping is extreme, losing a lot of the feeling of the image. Since I do not yet have a wide angle, I really feel incompetent to comment, but perhaps there is an in-between here. The converging verticals still bother me a lot. But now I understand the problem. Thanks. skip |

don't wanna burst your bubble or nuffink ![]() Seriously tho', when you've had a good play + experimented a bit, you will start to identify the best uses for your ultra-wide angle, 'cos they are a rather special breed of lens which don't work in every scenario ![]() <Charlotte zips it>
