Soldiers from the English Civil War meets Fountains Abbey

At the recent shoot at my camera club with some members of the war re-enactment society, we rigged up a blue background with the intention of doing some chroma-key pictures. As it was very busy, I only took one picture but now I wish that I'd taken more.

Here is the original

I tried to find some images that would match the mood and the lighting. I think that I succeeded in the first, but not completly in the second objective

Try John's copy and paste suggestion and in the meantime I'll knock up a 'how to' on the technique I used for these. You don't have to have a plain background, it just makes it a bit easier.

Good bit of photoshop or whatever Graham, well done. Only thing his haircut is too modern, needs a helmet or hat.

You are right Colin. Unfortunately I only took this one picture with the blue BG due to a lot of members being there on the night and the others I took with them wearing all of their kit were not right for the pictures that I had for the BG

Nice work Graham, I have been thinking of getting a Chroma B/G for some time, this has decided me, so I will get out the Speed graphic catalogue and start looking.

Thank you Charles. Truth be told, I don't do much of this. Trying to match the lighting in the two pictures is a nightmare ans it is so easy to get it wrong and the final result is rubbish.

Re: Soldiers from the English Civil War meets Fountains Abbey

I was at Fountains Abbey in the summer but have not yet used any shots as backgrounds. I did take some interesting characters at Gloucester Docks which was very crowded but also photographed the docks on a quieter day. I have used Chroma Key in the past but these characters were taken in a very cluttered background so I used Topaz Remask 3 to extract the figure.

Dave, Definitely a good cut out, looks like the real thing and you have blurred the BG in nicely to match.
