Re: unknown format

I've never used PSP10 but it sounds like it can't read raw files natively. You can still get RawShooter Essentials from Pixmantec for free but that won't be the case for much longer as Adobe have bought them. Corel used to bundle that with some of their products, not sure what they'll be doing in the future.

Another good raw converter which is not free but won't break the bank is Bibble there's a free download on their site. A lot of people like Capture One as well.

Or you could try the Lightroom Beta from Adobe, currently free but obviously will not be when they release it.

Raw has its advantages, it takes a bit more effort but I think it's worth it.

cheers

Dan

Re: unknown format

Also the software that shipped with your canon will allow you to adjust the RAW file in the way you need it to then will allow you to convert to a tif/jpeg and maybe others for you to open in PSP 10.

Re: unknown format

You need to update your Adobe camera raw plugin to the latest version then everything will work correctly in PSP.

For more details see the thread below...

Adobe Camera Raw 3.6 Beta update for Canon 400D, Nikon D80 & more ..

EDIT..Doh should learn to read properly before replying. I mistakenly read PS when you wrote PSP. Sorry for the bad information.

Re: unknown format

Paint Shop Pro X won't recognise RAW (.CR2) files from the 350D or 30D. It does recognise RAW files from earlier cameras.

Corel have now released PSP XI which works with RAW files from the 350D and 30D. However, it is fairly slow to open them, and the corrections (using Smart Photo Fix) don't work very well IMO. It suffers from the same problem as Bibble, in that highlight recovery produces colour casts in blown areas that should really be neutral grey.

I've been trying out several RAW converters recently as a replacement for Rawshooter Premium, and it is the highlight recovery that really sets them apart. Some don't have this feature at all without adjusting curves - including Canon DPP. Others make no attempt to recovery completely blown areas (255,255,255) but reduce the tone of other highlights, which to me produces a very artificial effect. Bibble sometimes works, but can introduce strong casts and/or artefacts into recovered areas.

The best by far (again IMO) is Adobe Lightroom Beta 4, which seems able to extract detail where none was visible, without any unpleasant side-effects. Unfortunately, although the Develop module in LR B4 is excellent, the bits at either end still need some work and are likely to change for v1.0.

HTH!

Re: unknown format

PSP X ships with RSE, or at least, mine did. having said that, I've not tried to use PSP X with RAW directly, but I'm sure you can save to jpeg or tiff from RSE then load these files into PSP X.
