All That Jazz

Concert shoot that I did on Thursday. It was the D300's first 'event', and I was expecting there to be decent lighting. Oh dear. Turned out the school had payed for some extra lights, which arrived, but then only people insured by the school and over 18 could put them up. They...er...didn't.
So, naturally, I was stuck up (haha, not like that...) at 3200 with the Tamron at 2.8 almost the entire time, and I think it performed remarkably well. Here are a selection of shots, basically unprocessed (all quickly put through Lightroom with same preset and maybe minor adjustments.

TFL, and comments welcome

Jack

Re: All That Jazz

on the first the focus seemed to have picked on the guitar which i like, with these type of shots, i think it can work, i like all the images, my favs are the piano keys, and the last one, shows a good document of the event, good set

Re: All That Jazz

I'll echo what has alredy been said Jack - very nice set with some different shots, like the keyboard and the conductor from the back.

Last one the best for me, but you knew that, didn't you

Re: All That Jazz

Good set, Jack, especially in view of the lighting.

I'd turn the saturation down in the final versions - looks a bit high at the moment - and I think a slight reverse-S curve would ease the contrast.

Re: All That Jazz

Thanks for the comments, and Graham, yes, yes I did
Silky, I agree they are slightly over, I did try and take the vibrance down a little, but maybe they need it a little more. Not sure about the contrast, went down as far as I could in most, but the lighting was so harsh and uneven that it was hard to meter properly.

Thanks again

Re: All That Jazz

Welcome to the "shooting under brutal lighting" club! The D300 looks like it fared very well here... about the same noise I'd have gotten from my D2X bodies at about ISO 1000 or so. In the same circumstances I'd have had to fall back on f/1.4 lenses to get similar results... good job!

Re: All That Jazz

A bit contrasty, but a good set Jack

The good sharp detail which you've captured does have a downside ... the guys in the pinstriped shirts, and the guy in the 2nd shot, all look like they slept in their clothes! I can even see the fold mark on the last guy's shirt

My fav's are the piano keys (although it's a bit noisy) and the last conductor, these I think are great shots, well done
