Another from the Cairngorms

I quite like this one because of the thoughts I had when I saw it to start off with. It's a small loch just outside Aviemore, fairly remote but there were some cut flowers which had been thrown in, wish I knew who threw them in and why.

Edit: A lower angle would have been nice to get the castle more as a direct background but I was already lying on my stomach

Doesn't work for me, I think there is too much of a gap between the flowers and the land. As in two points of focal interest which makes me keep flipping between the two.

A polariser would have been a great help here. Killing off the reflections would have extended the forground further into the shot and lead the eye nicley.

Superbly enigmatic though isn't it.

Thanks Sammy, it really needed a lower angle to have less water in the middle section. Unfortunately I just couldn't get it because of the location

dazzajl, I did use a polariser, didn't matter which way I turned it I was getting reflections somewhere, eventually decided to leave the reflections in the mid section in favour of getting rid of them close to the bank.

Apologies, I get so used to people that only get them out the bag for sunny skies.

no need to apologise. it doesn't really look like a polariser's been used I think it might have something to do with the field of view with the 17mm focal length, too wide for the polariser to be really effective across the whole scene? Anyone know?

Was a funny day, very bright sky but really flat light, had a grey grad on here as well.

You see a true photographer would have got into the water, the shot is everything after all.

My feet plus loch equals dead fish, they'd never believe I wasn't poaching

Tend to agree with SammyC on this one.
I often use an Angle finder C to get to ground level. This would reduce the amount of water in the middle section. Choose another time of day when the sun is nearer 90 degrees to the angle of view and I have to say I would get rid of the flowers since they do nothing for the shot and mean nothing to you.

Sorry to be so negative, Dod, especially since it's the share and not critique forum. :icon_redf

Isn't a problem, as I said initially a lower viewpoint would have made a big difference

Funnily enough though, for me it's the flowers which should have been the main focal point. I can't understand why someone buys cut flowers and throws them into a loch, there's a story there somewhere

Anyway, here's another without them

For me this is far better, compositionally.
Some nice foreground interest without being too distracting.

I like this one.

As to the flowers I can only guess perhaps a tribute to someone who may have died/drowned nearby. ???

Regards,
Cameron

second works better for me too, though the first is very mysterious

Hate to be the one to say this but round here there are always bunches of flowers tied to roadside fixtures where somebody has died, normally if there's random flowers around anywhere it's because somebody has sadly passed away there,

either that or a spurned lover!

I think that is why I do like it, the flowers make me wonder and certainly make you believe there is a story to tell. Although the second is probably more compositionally correct I think I prefer the first as Eosd said it's very mysterious.
