another nifty 50 pic

This was taken at the weekend with the nifty 50, lovely diffused light coming through our friends conservatory. Only tweaking was to the eyes as they were a bit dark. what's the best method of lightening them without affecting the rest of the image ??

Re: another nifty 50 pic

That's a great picture Ian

There's probably other ways to do the eyes, but I'd try selecting both of the dark areas, feather the selections and try a slight levels lift - try using the gamma slider rather than the white point slider. You might on this one get away with one selection to cover both eyes and the bridge of the nose.

Amount of feathering will depend on the file size, but around 70 - 150 pixels should be OK.

Put a reflector on your Christmas list.

Gave it a whirl - not convinced!

Levels to remove slight colour cast, select face, touch levels to lighten, Gaussian Blur to soften, dodge eyes/hair/shoulder

I'm not a portrait/person snapper but agree whatever you did is 'too much' and unnatural.I would be tempted just to lighten the face a wee bit and somehow try to add a catchlight to the eyes. But,as suggested,a reflector of some sort would have thrown some light back into the face.I quite often used a white polly bag when attempting close ups as I always had one in my bag and it never made the results any 'worse'.But then,I'm Scottish and a notable tight wad:whistle

Re: another nifty 50 pic

Nice shot Ian!

I can see how a reflector would have helped this shot but I'm guessing it was not entirely set up and you had to snap when you had the chance. I'm experimenting with reflectors at the moment because I'm only now seeing how they can be beneficial. Mind you, I'm cheap like Water and I've been using a reflective shade that you use in your car to keep it cool.... haven't had much luck yet but like Water said it hasn't made the results any worse!

Did you use fill-in flash in this shot?

Re: another nifty 50 pic

I played a little with the picture in lightroom, all I did was play with the fill light, heres my result.

Re: another nifty 50 pic

I know you said "without affecting the rest of the image" , but fill light did what a reflector would have done.

No I didn't, your right that it was really just a grabbed shot, she doesn't normally sit / stand still long enough for setting up proper shots. We were at a friends house and I didn't have my reflector with me. I have just bought an SB-600 flash 2 days ago, so now have something new to play with.
