Thanks guys. Yes, I was using a Canon 300mm f/4L IS at around the minimum focusing distance of 1.5 metres, so the shots are cropped a bit. I don't have a proper macro lens, but TBH I'd not want to get too close in case they were scared off or stung me.

The technique that suits me best is to set the camera to AI Servo, Continuous Drive, 1/500, ISO 200 and try to keep the central focus point on the bee while firing off a burst of up to 8 or 9 shots. Generally at least a couple are in decent focus. I don't use a tripod because the bees flit around a lot and don't stay on one flower for more than a couple of seconds, so I rely on the IS to reduce camera shake.
