Big Fish

Here's the first one from my visit to Bournemouth Oceanarium a few days ago. He was a big fella! This is straight out of the camera; tried tweaking for clearer detail, but no marked improvement, so decided best left as is. Exif (lost in raw-jpg conversion): D50, 50mm 1.8 @ 1.8mm, 1/6 sec, ISO 200, matrix metering, no flash. Widest aperture + no flash due to low light but through glass (doh).

Remembering that this was taken through glass + water, and that he was on the move, and that I had to use a wide aperture because of low light indoors - thus slow shutter speed - to avoid using flash because of the glass <Charlotte stops for air> what d'you think? All comments/pimps welcome

Here's johnny ...

I was a bit silly not taking Mr. Tripod; if I'd thought about it, I'd have realised what settings I'd be shooting with but, tut tut, I hardly ever use my tripod - same old story, it's a pain to lug around - so not in the habit of taking it with me BUT it could've made all the difference here

Assuming viewers will make allowances for the shooting conditions (low light, glass, water, movement) the only thing I think is any good is the composition. It quite appeals to me, but others may see it differently?

Re: Big Fish

Tricky shots to get, as you've found! And tripods aren't always a help: "You can't use that here"

You might want to try leaning against glass to provide a bit of support tho' @1/6th even then there might be some movement. Personally, think you're better off changing the ISO to allow a better speed and DOF - better to get noise which can sometimes be rectified than movement/shallow DOF which can't!

Yes, true about not being able to use tripod anyway.

As you say, I could've increased ISO + I think a bit of noise wouldn't have shown up too badly as this is mainly dark tones, but I didn't think of that at the time It was a family outing + I was conscious of holding the others up, so couldn't faff about too much.

Fi
It was the opposite with me Fi, I was so busy taking pic's I missed bits, like the talk they gave on the giant turtles (or whatever they were, not sure 'cos I wasn't listening LOL). Re: bottom of barbels, I thought them trailing out of the frame was more effective, but I can appreciate some wanting to see the ends too

Thanks peel, I use Serif PhotoPlus. I convert using the export feature (not save as) as I can re-size to specific size for pixalo this way. Hijack away for this help

Thanks for your comments
