Black Magic

Okay first pic post and maybe Dave will appreciate this being B/W and 3 shot hdr. Not one of my most recent shots and taken with the kit lens. Got up early for a sunrise as the weatherman said it was going to be clear skies only to find it overcast (oh yes I remember it well). Probably didn't need the hdr but I went with it anyway, the only shot(s) I got that morning so tried to make the most of it.

Sharpening for web is not my strong point so hope this is fine.
C&C Welcome.
TFL.
Ken.

Re: Black Magic

Fine enough ken Good exposure and sharpness. If I had to moan about anything I can only say the horizon turns up a touch at the left

Very dramatic Ken . I love really dark shots & this one really works. Do I sense you used an omni light processing around the tree ?

Re: Black Magic

Do you perform the HDR on the colour shot, then convert ...or convert to Monos & then HDR ? It's an area I haven't really played with, so intrigued to see what I can do with Mono's

Is it that dark, I need my monitor calibrating badly...I just done PE's Monitor Black Point Test thread and up'd the brightness...hence it doesn't look too dark here, with plenty of detail in the foreground.
Yeah I did use some lighting effect from another prog but can't remember what it was.....something like Mystical lighting I think.

I went hdr on colour first to see what it was like then from that to B/W.

Re: Black Magic

Great comp and a nicely isolated subject. It's maybe still a touch too dark and the 'patch of light' a touch too contrived (well, it is very circular so not entirely natural!) but relatively minor quibbles in a pleasing image!

Re: Black Magic

If you seem to be happy with the detail on your image then that's good enough, you have to remember that not all screens are created equal. Another good test, your print out looks like your screen. That said, if dark was what you wanted then it's good, from my own view I would like it just a little lighter to see more of the ridge. I am playing with HDR clouds right now and find that keeping the blue out on color shots when you want a dark blackish cloud is very tricky. Mono is one way to make that effect. Nice picture and keep up the good work.

Re: Black Magic

Had another look on a greater dynamic screen and the picture looks good all around but where the edge of the bright circle around your tree darkens on the right side,,a little lighter right there blended out to the rest of the lightend grass and this shot would be a ten.
