Broughton Castle
I took this Monday, whilst out for a walk... I'm starting out with B+W conversions and was wondering what people thought, I was going for an old fashioned look. Unfortunately the sky was rather uninspiring, so it does look a little empty!!!
All comments welcome, Cheers, Matt ![]() |

Re: Broughton Castle
It's a lovely shot Matt, although as you say, the sky is a bit flat. Is it my eyes or is it slightly on the tilt as well?

Re: Broughton Castle
Really like the shot, reflection is superb, tis a shame about the sky, definately worth trying to combine with a better one.
![]() Do think its on a slight tilt though, easy enough to fix ![]() |

Re: Broughton Castle
you know I would love to say it was built like that but I think you all are right!!!! Was worryin so much about my layers/mono conversion, forgot to deal with the simple stuff!!!!
I am looking for a sky to 'install', but as my photoshop skills are definately in the formative stages, managing to do it effectively with the reflection will be a challenge!! Fiona- The colour one is nice, but I dont think has the impact of the monochrome, I'll see if I can post it when I get home from work!! Thank you all for taking the time to comment Matt |

Re: Broughton Castle
Not much wrong with the house and reflection but that sky is definitely the problem here, not just above but also below as it is making the whole thing 'float' (no, not in water!) as it has nothing to ground it.
I do think the tones are less than they could be here. Not sure if you did this with PS Mouldy but if so and you used channel mixer (the most popular method for sure) let me explain why: the tones of the house and grass are almost identical. Assuming the house wasn't green or the grass wasn't brown, it should be possible to adjust the RGB tones in the mono conversion so that they look different and you get a greater sense of contrast between the building and the grass around it. So, for me this is well composed but maybe there is more to be gained from a slightly different processing. Cheers, Rob

Mouldy - when I visited Broughton castle last year, I found Emmettleffel !!
I've got a couple if shots from that day in an album here if you want to have a peek. Had a little play with your image, but not really happy with this effort ![]() |

Re: Broughton Castle
Thanks for the comments guys.
Rob- I see what you mean about the processing, I'm new to the whole B+W conversion thing, so I don't always notice stuff like you've mentioned (hence why I post stuff on here!!!) I'll have a go at processing again and see what I come up with. Dabhand- Like the shots mate. Every time I go to Broughton I meet a different photographer!!! It's certainly a popular place to be Thanks for taking the time to comment!!! |
