Excellent shot sir, you can see how narrow the DOF is when viewing the full size image as the feathers on the breast are slightly out but the focus on the head and the along the same line of the body shows perfect.

I think the bird and the perch are very nice,, its the bright white out of focus background object that is rather distracting...

It is a lovely picture of the male chaffinch - for more elusive than the female in my garden. The background is fine as it puts it in context - we are not up before the club judges and the bird stands out against it.

I agree the background could be better, after a period of relying a bit too much on Photoshop I've spent the last few months being rather strict on what I'll allow myself to do in order to try and force myself to improve the photography. So I could sort it out but I won't.

I've nothing against editing images, I think "use whatever tools you have to get the best results, it's all your work" but the very best results are always going to start from the best shots so my self imposed PS embargo is to force myself to get the best from the camera.
