Re: college band
As you've already discovered, black and white conversion can 'hide' a lot of the grain you get at higher ISO for concert shots and it gives a bit of an artsy look.
What'd you shoot with? Lens/camera/settings, etc? |

Re: college band
I think the first one is decent, but still a little bit too dark, and the second and third (same image) is way too dark really, and not very sharp.
I know you say about your style like that piano picture you posted, but I think really the conversions you make need to contain more detail for other people to appreciate them. Your brain will be filling in the details because you saw the scene when you shot it, but others wont be able to do that, obivously. Just advice

Re: college band
I can see where Jack is coming from. I guess the poor lighting is the root cause of the problem.

Re: college band
I agree with you, and I like the noise, as an aside
But on the other hand, there is still a case for saying that true style cannot be properly explored and developed until mastry of all technique has become second nature, and is therefore never the foremost element in your mind when taking the image, if you see what I mean. Of course there is opposition to that as well, like you have said, it's cool for the students to get 'iconic' shots of themselves, but as people like Martin have shown, there are ways to do this, and IMO yours were too dark, and his aren't. Not a dig at you, he's a pro, and you're a student, and I'm an even younger student so what do I know eh?
