These are very different images Fi. On here I think the Hi-Key one has lost a lot on the transitions between the light a shade, so the colour one does look better.
However it is not a level playing field. |

for me B&W is better - maybe because it looks more arthistic with less details but most important

WORKS BETTER. |

I personally think you have lost too much detail in the mono conversion and the skin tones in the colour version are what carries this picture. As you say the compression is not helping you here.

Fi - is there any chance you could post the original, unprocessed shot by way of comparison... I must say that both versions look overly-processed to me but I'd need to see the source to make an accurate assesment.
