Re: controversial
Well i think this sort of photo will encourage political debate,[ is it polictical ?] or religious propaganda.Or maybe someone has just lost thier england see the conection, footie flag, on the way home from a game.
. but i will reserve judgement on this untill i feel more comfortable with who i,m speaking to.you asked for a opinion these are my first reactions to the photo |

Re: controversial
Personally without context it evokes nothing - flag burning is old hat; in fact, I've often wished I had the flag concession in Baghdad - big moneyspinner, American flags.
I'm not offended by flag burning. |

Re: controversial
No feelings here one way or another. A flag is just a bit of material to me. Loyalty to your country is something else inside.

Re: controversial
I wouldn't even have recognised it as necessarily a flag! Maybe the full colour version would have made it more obvious.
![]() It doesn't look like an old hat though.... ![]() |

Re: controversial
If that had been on Hadrians Wall I think it could have been a bit more interesting, Flower of Scotland would have came to mind.

Re: controversial
From the pic, I have no idea what I'm looking at
From the comments I see it's a burnt flag. Other than that, I'm still in the dark as to the content/meaning of the image. My first reaction was that it looks like a giant leg/foot, maybe of a prehistoric bird ![]() |

Re: controversial
I could see it was a flag, and to be honest, my first thoughts were, nice bit of processing, it's not over done.

Re: controversial
well thanx folks, i am actually surprised that not everyone thought it was easily recogniseable....... there ya go then ,,, anyway my first reaction when seeing this was ohhhh we havbe some patriots nearby. It was burnt on a fence at the back of Doune castle ( why doune i have NO idea) but yeah it is the Union Jack and i have no idea either if that is the actual story, but its the one im sticking with.
the reason for the selective colouring is that i wanted it to be more prominant than it was in full colour - and it was a HUGE pain in the rear end doing it! So interesting to see different points of view, and not the reaction i expected i have to admit! Fi Last edited by fionaB : 19-07-2008 at 23:46. Reason: had a thought.......maybe it was ginger spices dress! |

Re: controversial
Now you have given some background info Fi, I think it was probably used to take some pictures (or video) of it burning with the castle in the BG. (Presuming the castle would be in the BG).
I'm led to believe that photo enthusiasts do things like this in order to make interesting and different photographs. ![]() FWIW - I recognised it on the first viewing, but did not want to blow it for you in the first reply as it would have prevented the feedback you were looking for. Considerate, or what? |

Re: controversial
my point on the selective colouring, is the same as explainging the image, i used it once a project and i was heavily critisised because i was not giving the viewer enough credit into reading it, i was told to put more trust in the image, i didnt agree at the time, however a year or so on, i understand were they were coming from, so im sure you will guess my comments that the selective colouring was not needed, as i think the image is a strong one, and not only does it lead you into what the story may be about, but may give us a clue to its location, but without the colouring, i think you got a strong image

Re: controversial
Just reading your opening paragraph confirmed my suspicion it was a flag.
However it looks quite liquid and I can decide if the selective colouring accentuates this? As for flag burning, there are worse things going on today. If I saw it happen, I'd probably signal my displeasure at the pointless stupidity of the act but as it's likely to have been done by a (large) group of knuckle draggers, I probably wouldn't want to get too involved. ![]() |
