Re: Corfe, and its castle

They look good to me, but I can't see all of the portrait format ones without scrolling and so I think they don't give the impact they otherwise would.

I'm tempted to say there is too much sky in #1, but as I can't see it in one go, I'll reserve judgment.

Re: Corfe, and its castle

I like 2 & 3 Mike, but on two, there is some distortion at the left hand side, the castle and bridge are a bit on the lean & the castle is a bit bright, but otherwise, it's a great panorama of the area.
3 is a great mono, lovely tones and details.

I've noticed this distortion on quite a few shots @ 17mm on the 5D. I'll have to do some tests to see if there's a prob with the lens

GREAT SHOTS, BUT I THINK NUMBER ONE NEEDS CROPPING AS TOO MUCH SKY.
REALLY LIKE NUMBER THREE MONO.

Re: Corfe, and its castle

Number 3 does it for me, love it. I pass Corfe Castle regularly on the way to dive out of Swanage, should stop next time and take some shots. Thanks for the reminder!

Re: Corfe, and its castle

Crop a lot of the sky off 1, number 2 if you crop some of the sky off and give it a Pano looking effect I think it would look great, 3 I like it just like that.

Re: Corfe, and its castle

I'll put my vote in for liking the use of space in #1 - lovely graduated sky (tho' the saturation looks a bit high - maybe in PP?)

Think space doesn't work so well in #2 but do like the mono!

Re: Corfe, and its castle

I think the sky is a bit too much in No 1 and I definitely don't like it in 2 as it just looks completely unnatural. I know the polariser is making it darker but it just looks too OTT. Having said that, No 1 does look like a fairly big castle as there is enough to give it scale. The 2nd one makes it look like a tiny little thing which it most definitely isn't. This is the problem with the shots taken from the hill to the side of the castle, looking downards onto it makes it look much smaller and less majestic than it really is. I think I would prefer more foreground in that one to lead us into the picture and I agree with jack that cropping it to a 10:4 panorama would work well. The whole village here is looking a bit flat and 'lost' in the overall picture.

I must say I do like the lighting and sharpness of the castle in both pics, wonder if you have slightly over-sharpened though as there is a noticeable halo along the skyline. With shots like this, you need to sharpen the high res version differently to the way you sharpen the low res web version or else what looked fine in high res will often show up as a halo in the low res.

The mono has great texture and tones to it, just needs a person or something to add scale. I know how big it is but people who don't know the castle can only imagine it. This has a sense of power and defiant majesty which so defines this amazing castle. Damn you Mr Cromwell for destroying something that you didn't need to destory but did just for the hell of it!

Interesting work here, I think I would reduce the polaariser effect slightly by rotating it to half its effect rather than using it at its strongest point, but still makes a decent picture

Cheers,
Rob

Re: Corfe, and its castle

Cheers for the thoughts folks.

I deliberately left loads of sky in on the colour shots as I wanted to (over) emphasise the colour change and what clouds there were. (Makes a change to moan about too few clouds )

Most of that adjustment was with the luminance sliders in LR.

Rob

I agree with your comments on the composition. I'd never been up the hill before and it was a bit of a mission and the missus was waiting, hence being quick.

In hindsight I should have gone back down the hill a bit for shot 2 to get the castle to skyline more. Oh and this shot is quite cropped so I could do other versions.

As we only go to Dorset every couple of years, I'll have to tinker with what I took last month.
