A Couple Butterflies
Taken at the Magic Wings Conservatory in Deerfield, MA. Nikon D80.
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2378/...a6b21c32_b.jpg I originally thought this next one was just another blurry pic but as I looked closer and cropped a bit I noticed you could actually see the body position just prior to landing. http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2154/...1827a13c_b.jpg Tim Last edited by Sonsey : 04-03-2008 at 04:58. Reason: Both shots broke the Pixalo 300kb size limit. |

Re: A Couple Butterflies
These are the first butterfly shots I've seen where they are in flight.
I think they are great Very nice shots Tim - bet you have more! |

Re: A Couple Butterflies
Really like No 1. Did you get that in burst mode ??
I think I like the second as well but I would have got rid of that yellow leaf on the left. A much tighter crop may also work better, possibly only the left half of the frame in a vertical format. |

Re: A Couple Butterflies
Thanks for the compliments. I certainly found out that butterflies are much harder to capture in flight than birds. They are very small and never fly in a straight line. These were not done in burst mode because I was using the SB600 for fill flash. I was a little apprehensive about cropping the second one more, it is already pretty severly cropped.

Re: A Couple Butterflies
Butterflies are sure tough to shoot in flight. I only got three in flight out of about 170 shots. They were not done in burst mode as I was using a SB600 for fill flash. I am a little apprehensive about cropping no. 2 further. It is already pretty severly cropped.
Thanks for the kind words. Tim |

Re: A Couple Butterflies
I don't mind the large leaf of #2. For me it adds context - the landing zone that the butterfly is heading towards and the landscape format to give it that space.
I agree about the yellow leaf though. |

Re: A Couple Butterflies
Certainly makes a change from Birds, very colourfull and I imagine you had to be very patient. Not sure about the very vivid flower in no1 being a tad overpowering but very cool shots.
![]() Not to rain on your parade but have you got dust on your sensor or two stuck pixels. One at 3:00 and one at 3:20 on the clock. ![]() |

Re: A Couple Butterflies
Both very interesting shots, definitely prefer No 1 but not to say No 2 isn't good. On that one though i would definitely reduce the saturation of the green on that background as it is over-saturated at the moment. Just reduce the green channel rather than the overall sats. That will help it to be less grainy as well. In fact, looking at it, I think you will find you'll get a better result if you leave the green channel and reduce the yellow first, then just adjust the green if necessary.
You've done an excellent job capturing them in flight so well done ![]() Cheers, Rob
