Re: couple more from the weekend

I know you are a dark and moody fan, Fiona, but I think that some of your recent monos are getting processed with high contrast and are just losing the shadow detail without giving the dark and moody effect.

I did the same thing if you remember, when I did those monos of Broughton Castle a while back. I thought I'd got them dark and moody, but everyone else said they were just too dark!

I think they work better with a more conventional process, as in the couple I pimped, but the moody atmosphere needs more than just high contrast.

I suppose what I'm trying to say is that I don't think you are getting the best from your monos as they are in between good ordinary images and moodies. In the last lot you have shown us, I think the colour ones are much better, although I think the tree in this thread is a bit lost against the field.

Rushes off to find a nuclear shelter damn, too late!

Re: couple more from the weekend

With the very bright, low sunshine in the Edinburgh area of late, there is already a large contrast range for the camera to cope with.I hear what you say dabhand16 and I suppose 'Curves' is the best tool for the moody effect fionaB is after without blocking up the shadows?.I'll be honest,I just cannot seem to use curves properly.I know roughly what is supposed to happen but for me it never does!! .I will try local library for a photoshop book and have another look at Curves

Re: couple more from the weekend

Water - Rob has done a tutorial on curves here.

I've pimped a couple if Fi's monos, one in the galley and one in her other thread, and did them mostly with curves, with a splash of levels and a pinch of selections on layers + curves. The one in the gallery was a bit flat and I managed to bring out more contrast and shadow detail, the other was as you say, with strong sidelight. The shadow detail came out much more, but Fi didn't like it, as, indeed, she is perfectly entitled. (It is her image, after all...). I only did them to give myself a bit of practice, I know she does not mind deep down.

Did that sound convincing? Sorry, Fi......

Re: couple more from the weekend

I have to say I agree with graham. The first colour shot is good, the mono version does absolutely nothing for me at all. It is far too dark in the FG and the strong shadow near the right didn't bother me in the colour but is a huge black blob on thie mono. I don't like the last mono either. Putting this as delicately as I can as you know where I live <g> .... it's messy!

<OUCH, I just KNOW this is gonna hurt!>

Trying to redeem myself here....

I really do like the third shot, it should just be a tree shot but it isn't, it really captures my interest and is a picture that would make a good print. Nice lighting, perhaps just a tad dark bottom right in the shadows, and good lines that lead your eye into the picture.

Can I stop crawling now? My knees hurt! <g>

Cheers,
Rob

Hi Water - Fi is talking about the first section with the green 'face' in the main gallery page under the 'recent photos'. However, my pimp of Fi's other shot is in the comments under the photo in the general gallery. If you look at one of her pictures and the click on '(see this user's gallery) below the image and look for the mono's you will soon see the one I'm talking about.
