Nah - I was hoping the TA were out on exercise! Graet light, it seemed a shame to waste it.

The third here also - looks very good with the mist in the background allowing the swan to have more presence in the foreground

One swan is good, in general terms but two is not so good ! Now the third is just sooo close to really good, and so much better without its partner/friend/hanger-on ! Shame a rogue ripple has chopped its head off ... my turn to be picky ! Really though, for me the third is well worthy of the fight. Mute Swans, these ones are Rob. |

You know (and I'm not being any way nasty or elitist or anything like that) but if it wasn't for this site, these would never have seen the light of day.
This sort of thing just doesn't interest me at all. I appreciate the comments guys, I really do, but it's just not my thing. I can do it - any competent photographer can - what you see here is the application of basic compositional techniques and camera handling skills; the sort of thing that any of us can achieve with a bit of practice. We should all of us be able to produce a correctly-exposed and reasonably composed image - it's the least we should be achieving - even on manual settings. The only variable was the behaviour of the swans themselves and 5 minutes watching them told me that if I waited a bit, they'd come to me out of curiosity as much as anything else. And they did just that, only going away when it was evident that I didn't have any New Hovis about my person... But there's no flair, none of that indefinable 'something' that makes you sit up and say "Sh*t! I wish I'd taken that one..." I went out on sunday hoping to get some nice misty-in-the-treesy stuff, but the light wasn't quite right, or else I wasn't in quite the right place - I could see in my mind what I wanted, but I wasn't finding it anywhere I looked. I took these more out of desperation to come back with something rather than because I wanted to. I'm kind of at a crossroads with my work-work. The trip to Malawi will be the deciding factor, I think - if it goes well then OK. If not, it may be time to strike out alone. I don't feel that we're getting the recognition or support we deserve and I'll be up at Cosford on Wednesday at the RLC Photographer's annual meeting to hammer out a plan with the new bosses.

That a lot of us seem to posting stuff that's merely OK..but...
I exclude those who are new to all this and who are posting with a view to expanding their knowledge, but a few images I've seen recently, from people who have done some stunning work in the past seem a bit... ho-hum... and no - I'll not name names, because it's a subjective process - these are my thoughts only... Maybe it's the whole Photo-Sharing thread that's at fault for me. Critique - yes. Post an image for everyone to tear apart/praise/learn from (bad photos have their uses too - post your mistakes if you can't figure out why it went wrong). But the Sharing thread for me should be for those shots that require no editing or comment - it should be for the finished article, once you've done all your post-production - a showcase for your latest triumph! The point I was trying to make with my images is that they're OK. But that's all they are - OK. Not bad... so-so. So what? Mmm.. Swan.. nice... Next! |

I continue; Not my words ! Obviously ... Even a showcase will draw comment and even criticism ... and what is good for Rob (or the next JoeB), or just OK, Not Bad etc., may be excellent or cr*p or somewhere in between to the next visitor ! To use your words, So what ? Even the best still have stuff to learn and, good as they may be even in mediocre, so what mode others can still learn from their postings and the way they are commented on and, if appropriate critiqued ! The point is we are all here for different reasons, some known only to us and others common to many. i.e. To enjoy our sport, share what we feel like sharing and offer up for criticism that which we feel, rightly or wrongly deserves to be criticised. And all voluntarily ! The fact that you were having an 'off' day photographically or otherwise, and yet still decided to share your captures shows an empathy to fellow pic takers - and, possibly an human side to Arkady ??
