Re: Crichton Church different angle

I prefer that angle but.........that foreground gravestone!.I think if you had been kneeling beside the stone to the right of it,it would be 'ideal'.
fionaB,this is only my view, how my eye/brain sees things but I have been known to be completely wrong!!!!

Re: Crichton Church different angle

I like this one much better, Fi, but the light has done you no favours. Other than returning in more favourable conditions, I think some HDR is the only way here.

It does look a wee bit flat but....
fionaB,assuming both shots were taken at the same 'session' then, if you can give this one the same treatment/tweaks as the other one, it may lend it the same 'oomph' and impact .

Re: Crichton Church different angle

I like this shot Fiona, very much ... except for the intruding grave stone. Could you move around it to the left or in front of it, leaving the church doorway (or whatever's hidden there) free of obstruction + in clear view? I like the tones - gives it an apt sombre feeling, appropriate for a churchyard. I don't see this as needing HDR, to me it's the colour that's flat, not the exposure, but I think it adds to the atmosphere. (You call it 'mono church' but it doesn't look quite mono to me, just very desaturated but not quite mono.)

Re: Crichton Church different angle

I'll buck thetrend, I prefered the last one, it had more atmosphere. However, this is a great shot as well

Cheers,
Rob

ps Lose the hint of colour and go the whole hog to mono, it will be better

Re: Crichton Church different angle

Here's why I like it: The comp is ace - if only 'the gravestone' was 6 inches tall . The tones, shadows, hint of colour, viewpoint, subject matter, pattern of the gravestones, the BG (plain sky is perfect for this shot), the texture, the 3D appearance (it's got real depth), the shades of the gravestones match those of the church beautifully, it's extremely well balanced, + the whole scene is topped off by being book-ended by a bare tree on either side, the number of bricks in the building ... no, just kidding on that last one This pic has so much going for it, it's actually your best one yet, I think Fiona

PS More: The lighting, i.e. the way the gravestones are in shadow (but still clear enough in detail) whereas the church is sunlit thus highlighting it as the main focal point, even tho' it's furthest back in the pic. It's a busy pic (apparently, according to the length of my analysis!) but it fits together beautifully.

Re: Crichton Church different angle

I like this shot Fiona, the muted colours work for me, different to a usual mono. I would perhaps like to see a more interesting sky, but hey you have to work with what ya got, the sky hasn't exactly be interesting round me very often since Christmas!

Not sure about the nearest gravestone, I think it obscures the church too much and is a little distracting, either making it more prominent or much less would work I think (although don't go digging up and moving gravestones on my accpunt )

I love the diagonal shadows falling across the shot, great atmosphere
