Ok went to the beach today, thought a good chance to use the 70-200mm and the x2, was a bit disapointed so i thought nothing to loss lets have a play,
this is the before shot

too much? maybe, but it was fun and it gives me a chance to learn,
and after all said and done thats what its all about,
that and having fun.

Definitely too much Lovely sky, aside from the vignetting, but the water is full of black speckles on my monitor, + the wake around the boat is bleached out.

The crop's ok, maybe a tad too much off the bottom. Ideally the boat needs to be on a third, but I see your problem here, if you put it on the left third, you lose the wake, if you put it on the right third its nose is too close to the frame, so I think you made the right choice of putting in the middle.

As you say, it's all about having fun while learning, + as long as you did both, then that's ok
