Destiny
I shot this on a club night when we had a studio lighting set up. it was my first time trying this and apparently I was the only one who got a smile out of the little girl all evening! It's not rocket science, you go down to their level, play with them for a little while until they trust you and off you go! Her mother was also with us all evening as an adult model but frankly she would have soured milk with the terse looks she gave all evening... maybe I am just better with kids than women

Funnily enough, the only other bit I did was 'repaired' her right shoe which was badly scuffed and spoilt the look so I tidied it up. Touch of sharpening as normal and that is it. Cheers, Rob |

Re: Destiny
I have looked at this several time over the last two days and each time I felt there was something just not right. The exposure is great, the lighting on the subject, the focus, the colour etc all seemed right yet there was still something.
![]() After playing in PS it hit me that it was the 'dirty/uneven' floor and the shadow to the back right of Destiny. Here is my altered version to show what I mean. I have not gone completely black with it (although I think a it would tolerate being a little darker) if that was your choice. I am sure that you will be able to work out what I did to alter it so I won't go into that here ![]() You may or may not see this as an improvement ![]()

Re: Destiny
Thanks for that Steve, I think this is a matter of choice really. I have also done this pic where I took it down to near black but felt Destiny was 'floating' a bit too much and needed a more stable platform given the pose. That's why i chose to keep the floor and seat a bit more 'obvious'.
Having said that, I do like the way you have done it as well, I'd be interested to hear what others think on this point. Cheers, Rob |

Re: Destiny
Beautiful shot, but something about it bothered me as well.
It seems as though Destiny is scrunching down to avoid being hit on the head by the frame. It is too confining. Is it just me? skip |

I am one of the people who believes we should let our subjects have expansion space so I have given what I felt was a fair border of space around her but I guess different eyes see it differently so maybe a bit more space would work too. I did loads of shots of her with her head in the more usual position of upright and some with a slight tilt but this was looking for something completely different. Anyway, interesting to see differing views. Portraits are great for bringing out different ideas as we all see them in different ways. Thanks for your comments and input, all very helpful and thought-provoking. Cheers, Rob |

Re: Destiny
Probably right, Rob....that is why there are horseraces...or something like that.
It is more likely her pose that gives me that feeling, because there is space above her head. Lets see some other poses of Destiny. skip |
