DOF / Bokeh tests

These are some newer shots as I get used-er to my SB800. I thought I'd post them because even though they're not wonderful photographs, I thought the DOF and bokeh on them was magical, and all because markulous convinced me to buy that lens

Re: DOF / Bokeh tests

Good luck, great set ups there by them selves. "Beware Bokeh has away of seeping in on you and going out of control, I won't make it easy for you on the monthly challange", but have fun anyway.

Re: DOF / Bokeh tests

Hey there great shots however just thought I would share with you some of the info I have found out regarding Bokeh , this is only short version as the sights I got on were quite in debt .Some had variation but on the majority you could say 99percent all agreed on this.....
Bokeh ...correctly performed bokeh produces an image with no sharp edges. Instead, the fuzziness produced by bokeh suggests the image without distinct borders."with Bokeh i undestand we are not meant to be interested in the sharpness with the focal point ,we are more interested in whats happening with the out of focus area.
Since researching this topic i find it totally fascinating and now appreciate a true Bokeh. It is going to be fun trying to actually take a Bokeh
Anyhow like everything we all have our version on how we interperet a photo .once again top shots (please dont take my views on what Bokeh means in a offensive way )

Re: DOF / Bokeh tests

Thanks for thee comments, and to chickadee:
No i don't take them in an offensive way at all, it is very interesting. What I originally thought bokeh meant, and I think it is the more widely concepted (if wrong!) idea, was the manner in which the lens deals with the OOF elements of the photo, as in not making donuts with light, and not making strange alterations etc, rather than the compositional bokeh, which is what I think you are talking about.

Re: DOF / Bokeh tests

absoloutely, all to do with the out of focus area. Also like the bg of your 2 picks .To me if the focus point of your pics were slight more soft on the edges ,just enough to get rid of sharpness ,they then to me (personal opinion) would be the perfect Bokeh. Hope you know what i mean .Out of the two the first would be my favourite ,only because of your choice of colour .

Re: DOF / Bokeh tests

Thanks chickadee, I have only studied a little about bokeh, it said that bokeh was the Japanese word to describe the out of focus area around your subject,,such as more soft is really good, less soft is less good. The idea about bringing the out of focus onto the subject has me baffled,,,,I need training,,,, the 2nd picture has soft edges on some tips,,,you can see the DOF, so real good bokeh would be to have a narrow sharp focus in center, and the tips touching the front side out of focus and of course the background out of focus, is that what you meant,,,I feel all out of focus now, but that's a good thing.

Re: DOF / Bokeh tests

sorry if have you confused ,i always have trouble trying to explain things.
to me i forget about sharp focus for Bokeh, i concentrate pinpointing small area to be in softly in focus and bg out of focus .But just so i dont have you to baffled am sure its like everything everyone has there personal idea on what it is and pixalo accept what we class as bokeh and leave it up to members for deciding what is bokeh or not .so dont worry to much .some good pics on flicker relating to bokeh .good luck with the monthly comp
