Eilean Donan Castle
Another one from Scotland. Perhaps photographed too often but I couldn't resist it! The halo only appears when I reduce the image size for the web. Would some one kindly explain this to me.

Re: Eilean Donan Castle
Haloes are usually either lens flare (but it would be visible on the full size) or a sharpening artefact (which might get worse with making smaller and sharpening further)

Re: Eilean Donan Castle
The halo is along the roof ridges. I am never sure about when to sharpen. Should I always save an unsharpened image so that I can sharpen at whatever size and resolution I wish to produce or once sharpened at say A4 and 300 ppi. The castle shot was reduced for the web from A3 300 ppi to about 10 in 7 in at 72 ppi.

Re: Eilean Donan Castle
Exactly that John. If you save the shot before you apply sharpening and then resize it for the web before sharpening, you'll avoid any halo. Having said that I think you worry too much.... it is hardly noticeable on this shot anyway
You just know it's there so are more conscious of it ![]() This is a lovely shot so who caes if it has been taken a lot before, this is YOUR shot Only thing I would perhaps consider is adjusting the gamut slider (often referred to as the mid-point in levels) to drop the tone down a little as it's a bit light. If printing I would clone out the people on the bridge too. But whichever way you look at it, this i a very pleasant shot and well composed so well done ![]() Cheers, Rob

Re: Eilean Donan Castle
Perceived wisdom is that sharpening is done as the very last operation - i.e. after resizing to whatever output you're after. So, best to process all operations necessary on the full size image, save that file and then resize followed by sharpen, add border and convert to sRGB.
Occasionally, I'll sharpen the RAW as the first stage in my workflow after RAW conversion but only under particular circumstances where I deem it advantageous (and I'll still carry out a final sharpen) |
