The engine is one of the diesel class' that pull coal hoppers to the station, There was just something about this shot I liked, I think its the movement !

#1 and 2 are interesting, #3 and 4 are boring and number 5 is very nicely composed indeed.

Thanks, but can I just ask why #3 and 4 are any different from #1 and 2 ?

I'm not dissing your critisism, I'm genuinely keen to know where I could do better ..

I preface this with in my opinion:

#3 has this big chimney in the middle which splits the pic in half but there's nothing on either side, nor is there any contrast (like trees on one side, cranes on the other or whatever). It leaves me wondering what I'm supposed to be looking at. Individual elements of it are all nice but together its just a bit aimless.

Exactly the same criticism of #4. The chimney disappearing into the clouds is a bit more interesting but its the same problem.

#1 has the cooling towers feeding into that cloud of steam, the silhouette actually interacts with the background and the spacing and positioning of the various towers and chimneys just works better to my eye.

#2 I like because its a tighter crop which uses the surrounding large buildings to good effect with large bold chunks of the frame taken up at a few angles which serves to concentrate my eye on the crane.

I was aiming the shots more at the dramatic skies without thinking about the rest of the frame..

You have to consider everything in the frame before tripping the shutter, especially around the edges of the format (remember most cameras do not show the full image and this should be allowed for when framing, i.e. you may get 'bits' at the edges that you couldn't see in the viewfinder).

Once you start to consider the entire viewfinder image as a complete picture your photography will improve. It is a common problem to only be aware of what you see as the main element(s) of the image (constancy effect) and to be unaware of what the brain tells you are the 'unimportant' bits. However, the entire image is important and gaining an awareness of the gestalt will make you a better image maker.
