Nice...

So what are the top tips for photographing fireworks then? Obviously I'll need a tripod. How do I know what shutter speed to use? It'll just be a black sky before the fireworks begin.

Nothing so complicated my friend. You take a Nikon Coolpix 4200 set the exposure to as long as it will go. Fix focus at infinity, turn off all the flash and AF assist etc.. Have a few beers and stand with your camera pointed at the sky clicking about a second after you hear the whump of a mortar launch. I got about 10 good shots and 20 guff ones with this method.

try anywhere between about 15 secs and 1 minute at f11/iso 100. that's with a 50mm lens. Allthough that will be dependant on the number of bursts and any ambient light. Don't try to capture too many bursts or it'll start to look really messy. oh, and try and find a place back from the crowds so you or your tripod wont get jostled. you'll be pointing well into the sky so you shouldn't get too many peoples 'eads in.

HTH dude

Thanks chaps. It is amazing the results you can get with a compact camera, just by reading the manual.

Thats a nice shot and such a simple technique I guess (although reading and doing are two different things in my own experience )

I boycotted fireworks this year. I was fed up with standing in soggy fields going oooh and ahhh!

I'm sick of fireworks, too. However, this novelty rocket launcher made me laugh muchly.

(DISCLAIMER: Don't try this at home. If you were ever stupid enough to think about it)
