First Attempt

Hopefully I have posted this picture in the right place.I would wecome any comment and critisism of this photo, which I feel is a fair representation of my ability. I have been using this camera since March this year, and is my first serious attempt at photography. My technical knowledge is quite meagre,so if you reply please can you use simple terms
Thanks Brian.

Re: First Attempt

That is a lovely tranquil shot Brian!

I think the only I might have done would have been to include the top of the tree, otherwise, it's lovely!

Re: First Attempt

I think also that it is a very good shot. Photos taken in this environment are particularly awkward to frame, because you often don't have any natural borders to work with, the landscape just continues either side. But here i feel you have picked out an area within the landscape that holds it's own interests and captured it well.

One little thing, if you like taking images that include water (and sky for that matter), then a good investment would be a polarizing filter. If this was taken with a polarizing filter or you already have one then ignore this. It gives you different variations on the same image, you can get more or less reflection in the water and makes skies bluer and add saturation to foliage etc. Handy little filter to always carry.

Re: First Attempt

Simple words? let me think: Ok.... lovely photo, well-composed, wish I'd taken like that after only a few months!

Will that do you? You have a good eye Brian and have thought about how you have put this picture together so well done. I do agree with the comment about the polariser, that would add depth to the colour of the sky and the water and try not to crop the tops of your main subject off. It doesn't look like much, only a few twigs in this case, but the eye likes to roam around a picture and this stops it from doing so: something to think about for next time.

But well done, this is a lovely shot indeed :o)

Cheers,
Rob

Re: First Attempt

Thank you for your comments so far.I take your point with regard to the top of the tree.I am reasonably familiar with Adobe Photoshop,so do you think a little judicious cloning around the tips of the upper branches would an acceptable fix?
I now have a polarising filter which I am learning to use when taking other pics.

Re: First Attempt

Nice shot Brian.

Yes try a bit of cloning (or the patch tool) around the top of the tree and see what it looks like

Re: First Attempt

Nice shot, Brian. Good foreground interest too. I go along with the other comments, but would add that as well as in future getting the top of the tree in shot, all of the reflection is also included. I know this is not always possible, but looking at your picture, I get the feeling that all of the the reflection could have been included (and the top of the tree) by moving back a little, or zooming out. If the bank then gets into shot, it then gives a natural border, even if it is cutting across the reflection.

Re: First Attempt

Can I ask brian, was the grass really as lush green as that? It does look a tad over-saturated in parts, it might not be the saturation itself, you might want to just try reducing the yellow slightly (Ctrl+U and select yellows in drop down menu then reduce saturation).

If you're ever popping over the Solent and heading my way, do let me know. Always enjoy meeting up for a coffee with fellow photographers :o)

Cheers,
Rob

Re: First Attempt

Yes, well done Brian, the extra space you've created at the top definitely makes a difference as does the slight reduction in saturation :o)

Cheers,
Rob
