First ever attempts at RAW

finally thought i shold start shooting in Raw, bearing in mind i dont have a clue about it! lol
the first one i was very tempted to remove the pylons etc, BUT i decided as the power station was in the BG it was apt to leave them......

second one was taken underneath Kincardine bridge kind of an optical illusion as the right hand pillar actually looks closer but its not!

Honest CnC as always please much appreciated!

Regardless of how you processed it, the bridge one is amazing.

Re: First ever attempts at RAW

Very nice Fiona.

First one looks a little flat, could benefit from more contrast, saturation + sharpening? I like the symmetry in this one which the shape of the clouds + the way the light is falling create. The little boat on the right just balances out the compo nicely.

I concur that the bridge one is very appealling as is.

Good work here

Re: First ever attempts at RAW

Fi, the only thing to remember about RAW, apart from the large file size, is that they do generally come out of the camera looking flatter than jpeg's. Where jpeg's are processed by the camera, RAW's are not + contain ALL info recorded, which tends to be "too" balanced, + they almost always need tweaking of some sort to bring out colour, saturation + contrast, depending on your camera settings. I don't usually have to alter WB but others say they do. Once you've worked with RAW's a bit, you'll see a pattern in the processing needed, which obviously varies from image to image + types of images (landscape, portrait etc.), but you'll also get to appreciate that they're a lot more flexible, + you can process happily without degrading the quality of images. They can make you lazy to set camera settings, 'cos it's so easy to correct in post-processing, but it can save time later if you do tune up camera settings first; it all depends if you want to spend more time setting up + shooting, or rather do seamless shooting + spend time later on the pc, you're free to decide which way suits you at any given shoot. Either way (or both ways) practise + enjoy

Re: First ever attempts at RAW

thanx for that Charlotte, both of these were processed in Raw, but as i have NO idea what exactly it is im doing its rather a hit n miss! lolol
I always try to nail the camera settings first as I am a true beleiver in learning photography before processing.
gimme a few years or so to learn waht the sliders actually do in Raw and i may get there

Re: First ever attempts at RAW

There have been a few of RAW tutorials in DP mag and the coverdiscs over the last few months. Also, Kelby's book covers RAW on page 54

Re: First ever attempts at RAW

Like the bridge one Fiona. Hope you don't mind but it inspired me to try out a little effect i use every now & again .... Filter -> Render -> Lighting Effects -> Omni Light. I just wanted to see if placed over the end of the tunnel, if it would provide a brighter focal point , to draw your eye through.

Not a perfect manipulation, but hopefully you can see what I was trying to achieve. Need to find a balance of the light to keep it looking natural ......mines too OTT

Re: First ever attempts at RAW

Good work Dave! You lost a little detail in the BG either side of the bridge, but brought out detail right down the centre + in the bridge itself beautifully

Last edited by Charlotte; 25-02-2007 at 21:08. Reason: Added "in the BG" and "+ in the bridge itself"

Really like the symmetry and composition in the first image, whan i first looked at the second shot I thought it was ' so so' the more I look at it the more I like it, it really grows on you.
