Re: First hard frost
Lovely stuff Phil, really nice work, especially the first one :o)
Living on the south coast, I don't get as much frost and snow as the rest of the country which is a pain only because I want to take photos of white stuff and the only white stuff round here is dandruff and talcum powder! Oh well, c'est la vie I guess <g> |

Re: First hard frost
Hi Fangman,
Good pictures. My friend in Norfolk sent me a text tonight to say: 'Thick freezing fog. Icy lanes. HOME SAFE!' Last edited by Joseph McGarraghy; 19-12-2006 at 19:36. Reason: Close quote |

Re: First hard frost
Too much soft living!
I don't think a pool has ever got that hot here - we cook eggs at that temperature. It was -1C when the picture was taken . . . as we say "Brass Monkey" weather . . . enough to freeze the balls off! |

Re: First hard frost
Hey Phil, do you know where that phrase comes from? 'Cold enough to freeze the rocks of a brass monkey'. It sounds a bit rude but actually it isn't at all....
It goes back to the days of the old sailing ships which were usually armed with cannons along the sides. By each cannon there was a large square platform made of oak or other hard wood and then covered with a flat brass plate which was known as 'The Brass Monkey.' I haven't found out yet why it was called that but it was! On this plate, they would stack 30 cannonballs, which had the nickname 'the rocks', in four layers: a 4x4 layer at the bottom (16) then a 3x3 layer (9) then a 2x2 and then a 1 on top. When the weather becamse very cold, the brass would contract and often made the stack of balls/rocks unstable and this would sometimes lead to them rolling off the plate. Hence, it was cold enough to freeze the rocks (cannonballs) off a brass monkey (metal plate). So now you know :o) Sorry to bore you all with that, my head is stuffed full of utterly useless information!
