First share, hometown shot
I figured my first shared picture would be a reflection of my hometown, so here it is:
![]() The Spirit of Detroit. To add up to nichpr's quick rundown, this shot was taken in October during the Tigers 2006 playoff run. It was the first time I'd ever actually been down to get pictures of it, and didn't know that they'd already put the jersey on when I went down there. Pleasant surprise! Dave, thanks for the tip. I uploaded to my member gallery, and used the border creation tip in the tutorials section to add to the shot a little. Last edited by ChrisRabior; 07-03-2007 at 16:02. Reason: correct image size |

Re: First share, hometown shot
Go Tigers!
Great Shot and Welcome to Pixalo from a fellow Michiganian. For our overseas Pixalo friends that statue is over 16 feet tall. To rally the city spirit as our professional sports teams approach the championship games, this statue is adorned with a jersey from either the Detroit Tigers baseball team, the Red Wings ice hockey team or the Detroit Pistons basketball team - great fun. - Paul |

Re: First share, hometown shot
Sorry to have to do this to your first shared pic Chris, but the file size was over double the 200k Pixalo limit.
If you upload a smaller version (under 200k) I'll be happy to fix the link again for you.

Woops, my bad. I'll try to fix it up a bit. Shouldn't have trusted photobucket to shrink it down enough..

Re: First share, hometown shot
I posted a reply here earlier but it has not appeared so I'll post again and if the other one shows up, you can read me in stereo <g>
I like the image as such, taken well enough for sure. Just two things I would like: first has been mentioned, the orb radials in the left hand have been cropped off and this is making the image look incomplete on that side. The other thing is that until Paul mentioned it, I assumed this was just the size of a normal person, there is nothing in it that gives it scale. I am sure that as a 16 foot high statue it is a lot more impressive than it would be at 6 foot. That is how it appears here. As this is local to you, I wonder if you could take a few more and put something in that gives a sense of scale. I'd like to see it again for sure. Cheers, Rob

Re: First share, hometown shot
![]() I did a quick search. This is from the Detroit News website. Here's the page link that hosts the above image : The monuments of Detroit Hope that puts some perspective on it =) |

Re: First share, hometown shot
Sure does Chris, but I must say I prefer it in colour as the lovely contrast between the green and the gold works great. So, go back and take the same sort of shot as this one but looking from the other side so that we are looking towards, not away from the statue's face. Put a friend, brother, child, stranger, whoever, in the shot to give it scale and I think the Detroit News will be after you for a copy

Re: First share, hometown shot
Resurrecting my old post. I finally made it back down to get a distant shot of the statue to give it perspective and offer a view of a bit more of its surroundings. First shot ever with my new 28-75mm f/2.8 Tamron lens =) I was driving by, and got stuck at the light long enough to pull the camera and snap a shot. Didn't have a chance to frame, focus, or check anything before the light changed.. so don't judge too hard on quality =)

Re: First share, hometown shot
I think this one actually has more impact then your first one Chris. Maybe because there is a better sense of proportion.
I think a shot from halfway between the two with some people in close to the Spirit to give the proportion would show it to the best advantage. |

Re: First share, hometown shot
I want to get one with the statue, pillar, and inscription as a vertical shot with people in the picture. It's hard for me to get down there enough to set up the shot though. Ah well.. gives me a reason to keep going downtown =)
