Gerbera & water drop macros

Isn't it lovely to have a day off and just play! This is something I've been wanting to try for a while.

All C&C welcome.

You seem to have this kind of shot sussed, although in this one the background is so out of focus it makes you wonder if images in the droplets were added in PS. On that basis I reckon they work better when you can just make out the image in the background , that you maange to capture so well in the droplets

Re: Gerbera & water drop macros

I thought about that Dave but the image becomes too cluttered then, with this set I wanted to keep the OOF colours of the background flower in the image which in this case goes from the dark centre through orange to yellow.

I'm not so sure about having it sussed, there was a lot of fiddling and minute movements of the background to try and get it right, it was a real Heath Robinson affair with flowers inside a glass on top of a tin can etc. Good fun though!

What I was trying to do was to get the flower reflection in the droplet to completely fill that space, a bit like this one...

Re: Gerbera & water drop macros

Seeing where you are coming from Colin. Actually viewing them again, as a set, I find them quite appealing as they are. I like the abstract feel of shot #2 & #3 with the different colour schemes. They defintely work better as a set.

Re: Gerbera & water drop macros

i like them all apart from the first one, I find the big OOF part of the flower in the top RHS literally drags my eye away frm the superb drops of water.

Really enjoy them! Not just the detail but the colours are tremendous. Can appreciate the amount of work gone in - well worth it, I reckon!

Seeing as you asked so nicely. I started with a bunch of flowers and removed a Gerbera and placed it in a glass in front of another flower. I then sprayed with a fine mist using one of those garden sprayer thingies I found in the garage until the drops formed. By moving the bunch of flowers at the back you can then get the reflected image in the droplet (you can move the single flower but the droplets fall off), it took a lot of trial and error but I found that the closer the rear flower was to the drop the better it filled it. I was using quite a wide aperture in order to throw everything out of focus and concentrate the eye on the droplet.

I've just done a very quick reconstruction of the set up, it's not accurate but will give you an idea (hopefully!).

Hope this helps.
