Hey Guys
I'm new to photography and I have a love for motor-sports. These were shot down on the louisiana bayou with a digital rebel xt using the basic sports mode. I would like some suggestions and ideas on how to improve my work........

Re: Hey Guys
Apart from the first one which has a little motion blur, there is no real sense of speed in these as the bikes and track are sharply focused. The best methods for getting a sense of action into the shots is to get a fairly slow shutter speed and then either take a static photo where the track will appear sharp but the bike will have motion blur or, better still, tkae the shot while panning with the bike (keep looking at the head of the rider and keep that in exactly the same part of the viewfinder all the time) as this will keep the bike sharp and the track will have lovely motion blur so that it feels like it is racing around the track.
Panning does take practice but once you are used to it, it can produce some real cracking shots. Cheers, Rob

Re: Hey Guys
Just one little point Juice, the Critique board should only have one photo at a time. You can post several in the Sharing thread but this one is for more detailed critique of one pic.
Cheers, Rob |

Re: Hey Guys
Hi....
I agree with Rob. Even the wheels are stopped. The techniques that Rob is suggesting are not easy, and take a lot of practice, but I think that you will have much more dramatic images with them. But shots are wonderfully sharp, and your exposure is good but there is no sense of motion. Also, I think that I would like to see a bit more space in front of the rider, so that we can see where he is going. Looking forward to seeing more. skip |

Re: Hey Guys
HI Juice & welcome to Pixalo. Nice to have another Bike fan amongst us. As Rob said a slower shutter speed & panning will get a good sense of speed. Another good one is to get a position where you can catch the guy head on with knee down & use the narrowest depth of field you can get from your lens (eg.f/2.8), to throw the background out of focus.

Re: Hey Guys
Although these guys shoot MotoX & are closer to the action, I'm sure most of what they preach can be applied at the track :- Shooting Moto X
Hope that helps. |
