High ISO Indoor portrait (mono!)

This was another test for the D300. I tried to get a good portrait in a pub with no natural light, and only dim red coloured lights lighting the room. At ISO 4000. At f/4.5. Not fun. I managed 1/80, and with some careful processing produced a usable shot at smaller print sizes. I am hoping to buy me the 50mm f/1.8 soon, which might alleviate the problems to a certain degree.

What do you think?

Re: High ISO Indoor portrait (mono!)

OK, it's grainy but it's not too shabby - especially given that ISO!

I guess it could've done with more light on the face (anything worth a touch of dodging in the eyes?) and cropped in closer (losing some of the top and LHS)

A trip through noise ninja would probably do that image some good.

My only complaint is the CCD noise in the blacks and gradients in the background.

Re: High ISO Indoor portrait (mono!)

At the settings used and in the circumstances/location/subject/lighting I think it's a creditable performance by the camera.I find the white blotches at ear level are a bit distracting as far as the photo itself is concerned [especially on the left] but I assume you never planned to enter it in a portrait competition, so for for what it is it is fine.

Re: High ISO Indoor portrait (mono!)

Thanks for the comments, Mark I'll have a go at dodging the eyes, but it might just enhance the grain, and I'll have a go with the crop, which I think would work well.
lcraft, it might do the trick, but on the other hand, some grain in certain images can look ok, and I think here, the 'nutella' look might ruin what mood there is to be had here.
Water, that's pretty much the summary I came up with in my head, thanks for the comment.

Re: High ISO Indoor portrait (mono!)

I like the composition, viewpoint, angle of his head/face + his facial expression. Good range of tones, but I agree that the 2 bright blobs at ear level are distracting. Yep, a crop off the top would be good.

This isn't grainy, it's noisy. Digital noise does not hold the same appeal as film grain. Maybe Photoshop can simulate film grain, but even a D300 cannot Please grace this portrait with a run thru noise ninja (or whatever you use)
