Homeless and cold

This guy was huddled up in a sleeping blanket in the financial district of Toronto and I cannot begin to imagine how cold he must have been, it was about -24 at the time. The sunlight was reflected of various glass fronted buildings giving the dappled effect to the pavement.

What to say?.I see poor souls here in Edinburgh who are in the same boat.I cannot begin to imagine what it must be like living on the streets at this time of year, or any time of year. This picture is all the sadder that we cannot see the person. Not a person in fact just a shape or 'thing'.

Re: Homeless and cold

Wow, that dappled effect really adds to this already strong image. Wonderful composition too, it's like he's really isolated from the busy world around him which gives it that extra emotional effect.
I'm going to be doing a project on homelessness in Cardiff soon so this is some good inspiration too. I'm almost 100% sure now that I'm going to be shooting only in black and white as it seems much more suited for the theme.
Great job =]

Chaz - don't shoot in black and white - do a conversion in PP - the results will be much better.

^^^^^ Absolutely.

Hacker - emotive and depressing, especially since it was in the financial district where $$$$ change hands every second - but there's none for him.

On the contrary, I have seen many photos on this, and other forums with serious visual strength. You have chosen to pick this one out to make a statement about.

Re: Homeless and cold

A cracking photograph Hacker, very strong and emotive, the b&w treatment works and the conversion is great.
My wife was over there a few years ago and she saw very similar things, "apparently" many of the homeless people there huddle around the vents that release warm air and most are very well dressed as vans with food and clothing circulate distributing the stuff.

Re: Homeless and cold

Beautiful shot Hacker,
very sharp blanket and lighting around the subject. I have been aware like all of you the homeless ordeal,,,and I have been moved by the efforts of RAM,,remote area medical.
All free, and goes all over the world, the records of what they treat is of the most interest. But still a very nice effect left to the imagenation of what the person looks like or who it is.

I'll be shooting with black and white film =] Though I'll be scanning and digitally enhancing for the final prints, so would it an idea to shoot colour film then convert?

No - thought you were referring to shooting digital with mono camera settings.

No problem shooting B&W film

Re: Homeless and cold

Thank you for the comments, he (although it could have been a woman) was not near a vent or any other source of heat and whilst I saw quite a few others in a similar plight this person really struck a chord with me. I don't usually do 'street' photography but I had to take this and as I was framing it I knew it would be a mono shot.
