Hurst Spit beach

One of my fave places. Hurst Spit is a 2-3 mile long shingle bank leading into the Solent with a 16th century castle at its end.

1/3 Av exposure - 1/8 sec @ f/22 ISO 100 [300d - 17mm on 17-40L with 0.6 Cokin ND grad on tripod]

Manual exposure - 2.5 secs @ f/22 ISO 100 [details as above]

Edit: also managed to get my blog photo for today:

Prefer the first of the Hurst Spit ones. Sky in the second looks a little soft. I know it's just the way the sky is (not a technical issue) but I still prefer a nice bit of detail in the clouds. Either that or no clouds at all.

And I've left a comment on the blog. Love it.

i really like that first one, but maybe a bit more saturation would make it pop a bit more.

the last one is real nice and simple which im liking. was it polarised?

I have to go with the others on this one as well. I think the first one is the nicer shots of the two. For some reason I find the rocks a little more interesting though with the way you have the water wrapping around the rocks like that, really nice. Nothing really interesting happening in the sky. I would crop just below the horizon, but that's just IMO

I like them both, the first one is more interesting but the second is more soothing. With pictures like the second one they always come to life if made in to a large print. It would make a cool picture for hanging in a “music room” I can see myself sat there listening to some Jarre or smooth Jazz whilst enjoying a fresh cappuccino and your picture

Just a couple of technical points on the first…I would remove the small cloud (top right) as it only draws the eyes away from the bottom of the picture and doesn’t really add anything to the shot. Also it may be due to compression or slight over processing but you have got a halo across the top of the headland in the distance. Both are easily corrected though

probably a stupid question here but I'll ask anyways What is a halo? I'm trying to see what it is you say is there and I don't see it. What should I be looking for?

Its a white outline/glow that shouldn't be there. It is often cause either by oversharpening the image or can occationally be created during the resizing for web process. Most visible along edges or in high contrast changes on the picture.

Cheers - suspect it's a combination of both. There's a little USM on the image but methinks I meant to concentrate it on the foreground as opposed to the Isle of Wight. User error!

I love the comp and colour of the second shot - shame it looks so soft. Any ideas as to why? At f/22 it should be pinners unless the clouds were racing along the horizon.
I like this blurry water effect a lot and the idea for this shot is spot-on.

Do it again.

And sell it - the Chelsea set are paying big bucks for this stuff at the moment.

Not sure why this should be so - as you say at f/22 should be sharp throughout. Maybe it's my focusing technique. Will need to experiment.

might be the post processing or the way you are saving for web?

Lovely shots these. Roll on when I get my tripod
