Infrared Help needed...

Trying out infrared... but i can't get it right. I found a photo application which creates the effect, but i would rather get it from the camera, i used the the advice given in one of your forums but it was still black I'll be using a Canon 400D and 18-55mm lens until i get the hang of it.

Can anyone offer tips and settings to try please...

As you can see below.. Not that good

Re: Infrared Help needed...

Here's my tip for what it is worth. I assume you mean it is black (as in the picture when you are taking the shot).

This would suggest to me that you are not allowing enough IR Light to get to the cameras sensor. What I do is to select a highish ISO say 400/800. Frame up your image and then put on the IR Filter. Now when using the IR Filter unless you have a specially modified camera (which I don't have either ) the metering won't work through the lens.

So what I do is to turn on my Auto Exposure Bracketing setting to +2 stops. Then I set my camera to Manual mode and set an apperture of F16 and an exposure of 10 secs. Then I turn my timer on and press the button. The camera will now take 3 shots of 10 secs, about 4 secs and 30 secs. You should then see in the viewer an image in red and black. You can then adjust the timing/ISO/apperture as you see fit (I.e if still to dark increase ISO and widen the aperture (to say F8).

Trial and error will allow you to work out the best setting to use. Oh and brighter days are best for this IMO.

Re: Infrared Help needed...

Hi, Thanks for that tip, I'll be giving that one a try.

I don't suppose anyone knows where the Auto Exposure Bracketing setting is on the Canon 400D ?

Re: Infrared Help needed...

Hi Dave, These were the directions I followed before, I still got dark a dark image, I also change the filter from a 950n to a lower one and still I got dark images or just black.

The types of ISO range from 600 to 1600.

Steps to start out.

1) Ideally set WB with IR filter on. Due to darkness of filter you need to set ISO1600 & then set custom WB by pointing at grass.
2) Return to low ISO & set to shoot RAW if possible
3) Due to long exposure needed you'll need a tripod
4) Turn to manual focus
5) Take filter off & compose shot. Put filter back on being careful not to change focus
6) With camera in Manual mode choose something like 20 sec exposure at f/8
7) Either through remote cable or self timer , take shot
8) Once taken , view histogram of shot. If too dark, increase exposure & vice versa
9) Voila , IR shot

Note the IR focus point is different from normal light focus point. Older lenses used to show this position, but I always put to infinity position & play it by ear.

Re: Infrared Help needed...

I see IR dust bunnies,,I like this picture the more I see it. If I used the filter on the end I would do what chrisa does. Dave does it right too. I guess you did a little bit of processing,,. IR makes PS work for a living but like everything it gets easier. The sun glow on your tree is interesting as I love the way light is so powerful and can get blown out real fast. I watch my histogram on every pic. Reading the other threads I think I would shoot on manual mode and work your time out until it showed improvement. You also might do it with shutter priority mode.

Re: Infrared Help needed...

Dust Bunnies...lol Yeah. I have not had the confidence to start touching the sensor until i know what i am doing.

Maybe a bit of PS work was involved .

Trying to learn the fundamentals of IR, i used the help of PS to finish off the effect. Using the histogram is still new to me as being a bit old school and prefer Bronica ECTL 6x6 neg as i know where i stand unlike the new digital tech, but i will not give up trying to push my camera to do the same as i could with the old 35mm.

All the advice give so far will be tried out this weekend at the same location i took the photo of the tree. Thanks again guys for tips...
