IR Blending

Sat down to try this out, it would be easier to use one camera with a filter and shoot one color and one IR. But true to myself I do it the hard way. I have two pic's, lined up and the IR over the Color set to luminosity. A copy of the color set to Multiply and the color as B/G. All set to 100%. Just thought I would ask you what you think about the whole mix good or mixed.
Color

IR

Mixed Picture with order of layers

There are possiblities.

I think that sums it up nicely.

The idea behind this is original to me, however I get the feeling that this processing was an after thought to see what could be done to the images. Both versions of the image work well enough by themselves but neither is spectacular, that I think is the problem. I think if you had a very strong starting image and applied the same process then the end result would be much more interesting.

Whenever I want to try something new I make a point of doing so on an image that was either taken specifically for the test, or one that I am confident would be perfect for it. If you start from the point where you are not using the best possible its going to show in the results and could mean that in the long run you discard a new process or style that could actually have worked very well.

I hope you can see what I am trying to say and view my comments positively...because that's how they are intended

Re: IR Blending

When these shots were taken I planned ahead to shoot from the same place and align the pic's later and see what I could come up with. I have seen some very creative color+IR blends and masks that are very good. I guess this shot is one you would really have to be there to feel what was there. The far left side is far better and the left side of this shot appeals to me. I also took enough shots to make a panorama and that helps it out. I felt the texture of the IR highlights on the bushes are the biggest plus for me as I am very into this,,,they carry more into this picture then just shadows from the normal shot. As it is my first attempt, I was very pleased at just
getting the alignment close. I can understand what you mean by best shot, I don't always post my best shots, but this was interesting for me.

Love the experimentation - that's what keeps this hobby fresh for the rest of us. Thanks for the inspiration.

Re: IR Blending

Thanks Paul,
I have used a B/G copy to mono in a luminosity layer in my color pictures before so it isn't really anything new. IR is new for me and what it can add is pretty exciting. Thanks again for taking the time to look.

I've given this some thought when working on the few other shots I took for this blend and know I need to use a tripod for sure. I am already looking at reflected subjects and backgrounds and feel that your advise in this matter is right on..it's almost going to be like shooting hdr in a sense. Thanks for the insight Steve, it's helping plan it all out
