I guess this minimises the DoF problems that people often get in macro shots.......

Darn right Dabhand, the flatter the little thingies are the sharper they can be made to look! It's called 'orthographic projection' isn't it?

The Hospital Sanctum image didn't look heavily manipulated Les but given the verticals are all very equal, I am guessing you might have adjusted the converging verticals using one of the transform tools. You mentioned the distort tool and that is the one I would usually use to adjust CVs. Am i close?
