I always like to keep a polarizer filter handy when taking shots around the water, Hal. In this case the filter could have saved some of those highlights on the gooses neck and head. It might also have given you a deeper color to the water. Its a fun filter to experiment with and often invaluable around the water.

My advice to you Hal would be to get down low. You are above the headline so are looking downwards at a very dark head against a dark BG. By getting down on your knees, you'd achieve two things: you'd get the head higher and be able to select a lighter background, leaves or whatever, and you would get the eyeline onto the same level as the viewer's eyes which, even when not actually looking at us, creates a greater connection between subject and viewer.
