Macro Insect
An interesting looking fellow I found on my curtain this morning + the perfect opportunity for my first considered attempt at insect macro photography, after absorbing Marcin's fab tutorial yesterday
![]() #1 ![]() #2 ![]() #3 ![]() #4 ![]() #5 ![]() I realise they are not sharp front to back thought I'd add a creative touch with varying amounts of DoF ... does it work ![]() I look forward to receiving your feedback on these. TFL

Re: Macro Insect
Three is the winner here, as with the others I don't think you've used enough DOF to keep interest after the insect's head. I mean, its body is its most interesting feature, and that's why I think 3 works best.

Re: Macro Insect
No. 3 is great. I like them all, and contrary to what most people seem to say, I like the narrow/shallow DOF. I think it can work on shots like these.

Re: Macro Insect
No 3 is especially good followed by No 2. This is an idea well worth exploring further ...in the other shots a tad more DOF would be my personal preference

Re: Macro Insect
Agree 2 and 3 are the best shots, though the others do have interest in the shallow DOF, particuarly #4 for me, helping to blur the background, which is perhaps the most distracting thing in the shots. (Minor problem).
Glad to see some more getting into the bug habit! |

Re: Macro Insect
Thanks all for your feedback, very helpful indeed
I was fascinated with its bug-eyes, they remind me of a frog! Thanks for the identification Ken Never thought I would TBH - I hate creepie crawlies I blame Marcin, who has totally inspired me in this genre and who I hope will let me have his opinion on these ... where are you Marcin. |

Re: Macro Insect
Funny, I read in your wedding thread that these were taken with the D50, and I have taken some similar shots with it. Strangely enough there's something very similar about them, a kind of D50-ness that I can't put my finger on. Interesting...

Re: Macro Insect
good set here with 3 best IMO as with very narrow dof the side on shot provides the most detail

Re: Macro Insect
Charlotte i'm here
. watching . so here is my opinion.very good shots. you've used F 4.8 for last 3 ones and F 8 for no 1 and no 2. it's enough only for no 2 - looks fine. i love no 1 - very good composition and nice details. no 4 and 5 both have too small DOF - they are again with great composition but not enough details. try to use F 8 and more (F 11 if you can). colours are good, exposure is fine, there are no any reflections from flash - no noise - on no 2 and no 3 you cut his tail , it's not too bad but i'm interested how it looks.generally those photos are really good. and interesting creature. i was reading othe comments - no 3 is popular, for me it's interesting but i like that portrait .Last edited by marcinklysewicz : 12-05-2008 at 11:29. |

Re: Macro Insect
Thanks for your feedback folks
Marcin, I appreciate your detailed critique, it's a big help, especially as you are our resident Macro Maestro ![]() BTW I didn't use any flash. I have taken some more today, will post them up later ![]() |
