Miller's Dale

We're members of Derbyshire Wildlife Trust, so decided to visit one of their reserves @ Miller's Dale last weeekend

#1 The Quarry
Quarried Limestone was placed in the limekilns and then straight into railway wagons
Not too sure about this - did process in colour but then decided it may look better as mono

Canon 350D, Sigma 10-20mm @ 14mm, f/11, 1/50, ISO100, HH, FF

#2 The Abseilers
A bunch of kids were abseiling off the viaduct

Canon 350D, Sigma 10-20mm @ 20mm, f/11, 1/25, ISO100, HH, FF

#3 The Dipper's Nest
We wanted to see Dippers and unknown to us at the time of this shot, there was one of their nests in this shot, on the far bank!

Canon 350D, Sigma 10-20mm @ 10mm, f/22, 0.4 sec, ISO100, Tripod, FF

#4 The Dipper
And here's one of the owners of the nest

Canon 350D, 300mm f/4 IS, 1.4x TC, f/5.6, 1/10, ISO100, Tripod, FF

#5 The Orange-tip
We'd seen Orange-tips (loads) and Common Blues (a couple) but it wasn't until late afternoon before any were prepared to settle. A lazy shot (as I used my 300mm and not macro as I should) but I liked the resultant image with the backlighting

Canon 350D, 300mm f/4 IS, 1.4x TC, f/5.6, 1/200, ISO100, HH

Comments good, bad or indifferent all very welcome!

Re: Miller's Dale

They are all really good shots. Each is very different - clearly it is a great place to go if you came back with such a wide variety.

#5 also the favourite here but I also like #1 (although I would have pushed the contrast a bit higher but that's personal preference)

Re: Miller's Dale

Thanks, Larne. Do try to aim for variety but we were lucky with what was on offer - tho' go anywhere around here and things tend to fall into place

Thanks too for the suggestion - will try higher contrast

Re: Miller's Dale

We were there on Saturday but went to the other end of Miller Dale near Linton.

I could not get near the butterflies or the dippers we saw. You lucky Bu**er. I really am envious of that dipper picture.

The early purple orchids were more accommodating and there were a lot of them. I will post one or two later. You can find Bee orchids in those quarries you went to but a bit later in the year and possibly Spider Orchids as well or so I have been told. The Bee orchids are not as common as they were a few years ago I hope that they do not die out completely in this area.

Cheers, AQ! I remember you saying you were visiting Miller's Dale and did keep an eye out!

Now you see you got orchids whereas, whilst we were looking for them, we didn't see any! Look forward to seeing yours - where exactly did you find them?

A few on the side of the road to Lipton. Monks dale was full of them before the wooded area. Creswell dale is usually a very good place for these but we did not go there on Saturday.

Like the last one also. Do you ever use the Sigma 70-300mm for macro? If so how does it do?
