Minimalism and patterns.
Possibly my favorite style of photography at the moment, so had a bit of a play about with composition and patterns tthe other day. I'm not expecting many positive comments as they are a bit 'off the wall' but, I like the simplistic nature of them.
Light Switches ![]() Black 17 ![]() Turn the power off at the plug! ![]() End of the line? ![]() All of them look much better in big, so all the images are clickable links to the repsective Flickr page where larger sizes and .exif can be had. Any and all comments on my sanity welcome ![]()

Re: Minimalism and patterns.
Well Steve, I quite like them
The light swith is actually 'on the wall' rather than off and tells a story with the grubby marks around it.i like #1 and the colour in #2. #3 so-so, and #4 needs the little bit of stuff about a quarter of the way along from the top edge cloned out, and maybe the black bit above the LH edge of the white line. If you took them to the Tate modern you could probably make a fortune from them. |

Re: Minimalism and patterns.
Guess I have the same problem as I do with the stuff at Tate Modern! I just don't get it. Call me a Philistine, I just don't get modern art, minimalism or whatever. It just doesn't seem to say anything to me at all. That doesn't at all belittle its significance for others, I just have different taste I guess. Unmade beds, empty rooms with light going on and off and piles of bricks just don't give me anything of what I consider art to be.
So, in terms of these as technically meritorious photographs, they are absolutely fine: well lit, well focused sharp lines.... nothing to pick on there whatsoever. I'll have to leave it to others to talk about the pictorial merit as they see it. Come on Steve, tell me what it is about this kind of photo that makes it your favourite style of photography at the moment ![]() Cheers, Rob

The caption "End of the line?" made me chuckle

Re: Minimalism and patterns.
Love abstract/minimalistic subjects - it's the presentation of the everyday into something else, making us all look harder at everything around us. Nice ones, Steve!

Rob - this just made me laught out loud! I think most of us will be in this camp (you forgot to mention the running tap, and the pile of poo). Even better are the quotes from people who put interpretations on the things you describe! |

Re: Minimalism and patterns.
I like these. Looking at everyday objects, taken from there natural surroundings. All well composed and executed. Particularly like the first one.

I guess it's the really strong composition that allows shots like this to be 'interesting' to me. Even if it is something mundane, if the composition uses the thirds, and uses them precisely, then in my view the image hits you right in-between the eyes. If there is also muted light or other strong textures then that just adds to it. I have had the last one done in slide format and i'm entering it into the merit slide competition at camera club.........can't wait to hear the judges reaction ![]() |

Re: Minimalism and patterns.
Entirely valid viewpoint for sure Steve. Your pictures here are lifted above the ordinary by the care and precision with which you have produced them. I can't say the images grab my attention simply because they are not really my thing but that is more about my lack of appreciation than any problem in what you have done. So what I would say is that within the genre, you have done a very good job indeed
