Re: mono or colour?

They both have their appeal. mono looks dramatic of course but I'm from Edinburgh and the sky's never looked like that!

I guess I prefer the colour shot - the people on the royal mile are a welcome strip of varied colour.

Re: mono or colour?

I prefer the colour version, infact, I rather like it.

The b&W shot is too contrasty for my liking. The high lights hurt my eyes, or is my screen too bright.

Most people , myself included, seem to print landscape skies very dark. I certainly think it adds impact but I never pretend it is realistick, except in a few cases, where the sky really is very dark.

Re: mono or colour?

Between the two? Colour.

But I'd prefer the tower to be slightly off centre and a little more interesting sky:

Darken sky, crop left edge to off centre tower (and then bottom to return towards the aspect ratio)

Re: mono or colour?

I like the picture, Fi - colour or mono. However, I do think it lends itself better to colour. You have done a good conversion, but for me, the clouds on the RHS of the mono are the spoiler because at first glance they give the impression of being hills in the background, and just slightly detract from the image.

In the colour version, the building is also more derifined from the sky, but I do like the stronger contrast and composition in Mark's pimp.

Re: mono or colour?

thanx all, Mark the pimp is great i didint even think about bringing the sky down, the reason i didint crop the left was because i wanted to leave some of hte street in, but i do see what you mean abot decentralising the tower.
john, i think its your screen cos there are no really bright highlights in it.

PE, neither can i thats why i posted it here! lol

thanx all.

Re: mono or colour?

Fi, Ive had another look at the mono in brighter ambient light and it seems ok now.
It was twilight when I looked yesterday. A useful lesson for me.

Re: mono or colour?

I think I prefer the colour, although I do like the mono as well.

As I scrolled down - the top half of the mono came into view and thoughts of Harry Potter and Hogwarts came to mind.

Re: mono or colour?

I prefer the mono too but think the sky is a little to dramatic (is that possible? ) and overpowers the shot. no matter how I look at it my eyes are drawn to that part of the picture which is probably telling me it needs some more processing to make it blend a little more.

Irrespective, they are both great conversions and the last 'reflection' is fun too
