More feathered posing

Not a happy bunny as feeder occupied - plenty of squabbles.

Moving up in the queue - ready to get in quick!

Chaffinch for once lingered - checked on the strange flashes

Then made sure I got his best side!

This morning's visitors make being banished to the garage with my pipe bearable!

Re: More feathered posing

Fang, if I were you I'd have a blazing row with the better half and get yourself banished for a week.... you'll have enough shots for a book by the time you go back indoors <g>

Lovely stuff.

Re: More feathered posing

Nice series. Very enjoyable. I noticed you used flash. How far were you from the birds, and how did they react to the flash?

Thanks for the comments Frank.
Sigma 70-200 2.8 DG (Sometimes I use a converter but not I think with these) No real reaction to flash - aware of something but not enough to scare them off as seen by the series of poses by the chaffinch. Shutter noise seems only picked up by blackbirds and robins.
I use about 1 stop reduction in the flash and have a card tube fitted to the gun to stop scatter back from the open window frame. The goldfinches are about 10ft on the feeder and 12 in the tree. The male chaffinch about 7 - 8ft
Finch on the hoop 1/80 @ f4 iso200.
Male chaffinch 1/200 @ f2.8 iso 200.
I find that at iso 400 and up I get too much noise on the 350D.
Light was varying from bright sun to heavy cloud.
Workflow From Ray Barlow is crop and tidy if necessary - curves (usually Auto) - shadow highlight - not too much on highlight as it produces a halo - unsharp mask (1-1.2 pizel and 50-150%) the Neat Image noise removal aftr which I sometimes use the history brush over the main subject if noise removal has lost detail. Automate and fit image to 800 at widest and save. Have fun!

Re: More feathered posing

Great work, these are a joy to see. Your birds are much more colorful than those here in Michigan.

Nice shots! Very intimate and great angles. With regards to the noise, I think this is one of the commonly placed arguments for the Nikon D50 over the Ca**n 350D

[EDIT: Woah, at this point fangman, you have 666 posts! Scary ]

The very DEVIL I have - change my name to Damian!
I was losked into Canon as go back to A1 AE1 and then eos 35mm so kept with system when I went digital SLR. Other than the noise- I can't fault it - possibly TRUE spot metering would be nice . . . but on the other hand managed for 55 yrs of photography without it!
