My little 'urban' collection
Hi guys,
As I was dropping my girlfriend off at the station this evening, I thought I may as well bring a camera along, and have a wander around Nottingham train station in the dark with said camera.... I think the cold got to the bit of my brain with the common sense bit in it. Anyway, I managed to get a few photos, which I quite like, but thought I would ask you guys your opinion of them, and most importantly, how would you improve them? Firstly, a picture taken at the train station. My girlfriend wasn't as impressed as I was that this was handheld at 1/4sec... ![]() This one is just outside the train station, and is a bridgey thing that the tram line goes over: ![]() This was a little alleyway with some happy light shining at the end, so I just had to meter for the light at the end and see what happened: ![]() And this is a subway, on the walk from the bus stop back to my house. Errie huh? ![]() Cheers Guys Kimmett |

Mostly sub urban I think ! Nice range of shots there Kimmett !
Good hand held result in the first - despite the girlfriends complaceny. Not a bad B & W result in the second. Third does nowt for me I am afraid although the distant light is well exposed. And the fourth is downright scary ... not eerie !?! Get the authority responsible to sort the bl**dy lighting in that subway ! |

Like the first shot - shame its not a little sharper, but for handheld Im surprised you got that good
Reason I like it is you got a train running through with the clock, reminds me of timetables and stuff like that - sounds silly but the clock in the shot makes it for me. Last one as mentioned does have a sinister style about it, particularly as the tunnel seems to be on a downward angle, so the further you go the deeper you are, and therefore further away from safety, also the shadow in the mid section makes it more menacing Probably sounds a bit silly/stupid, but thats what I like about the first and fourth, the others dont really appeal to me. Good shots - thanks for sharing

Finally, some appreciation for my hand holding skills!
I have to say that the first and fourth are my favourites as well. The clock has been brightend and contrasted up on the first, to try to draw attention to it, glad that you mentioned it ![]() And yes, you are correct indeed Venomator, the subway is more scary than eerie! Actually, as I was there taking the photos, some guys started walking from the other end of the tunnel, so I decided to make a move! Cheers guys! Kimmett |

I like the first one with the moving train, the others are a little too dark for my liking (I know they were taken at night, but still a tad dark)

Ta guys.
Got one more for you, doesnt fit with the others, but I took it last night as well. Tis a picture of the school of biological something or other, in nottingham uni. I should probably know what it is, I walk past it every day on my way to lectures! Students eh? ![]()

This will sound really stupid, but everything in the last shot is nice sharp, straight lines - and because of that I think the fountain spoils it, the colours are good the exposure seems good. But the fountain - on an exposure that long I think looks too soft in its surroundings.
The composition may be out a bit IMHO also - rules of thirds and all that stuff. Think its a great setting that will get you an excellent shot - I just dont think this is the one, yet Just my opinion - thanks for sharing Alternatively an idea might be to try a shot from the other end of the photo so that the wall leads to the fountain in the distance (as opposed to having the fountain in the foreground), that might work better. |

That last shot, try it again with less ground showing and using the flash to freeze the water motion. If you angle it correctly the flash should have little effect on the building.
![]() BTW, is that a newish building, don't recognise it. |

A cunning plan indeed! I think I might wander over there again this evening, got my last exam today. I shall take a tripod as well, and try out some of you guys ideas. Bit difficult to angle an onboard flash, but I will give some slow syncro stuff a go, as well as some different angles
.As for the age of the building, I think it is fairly newish, tis opposite the QMC. I assume you were at Nottingham Uni at some point then? |
