My Trip to Manchester Velodrome
A group of 8 of us went up to the world championships at the end of March. An exhausting 5 days. It is very hot in the velodrome, apparently the hotter it is, the more the boards expand and the track surface is smoother and faster and all the spectators get hot. In fact, Andy found me in a corner at one point feeling very faint. But took so many shots it took ages to go through them, so here is a selection.
My favourite from the Championships, this is the Netherlands Rider Theo Bos, desparately trying to keep ahead of Chris Hoy in the last round of the mens Sprint. Chris won the first round and then Theo won the second with a really cunning piece of riding and this was the decider which Chris went on to win to gain his World Champions title. Had this made into a mug to leave at races with my business cards in and the printer has made it into an A2 print as a sample for me which I'm picking up tomorrow. ![]() The mens sprint team just starting their run. ![]() Rebecca Romero looks at the scoreboard and realises that she is the winner ![]() Shanaze Read on her way to another win for the GB squad ![]() Bradley Wiggins on his way to another World Championship title, what a star! ![]() |

Re: My Trip to Manchester Velodrome
Hope you like them. There are more on the website. The trip also made me realise that I need the EF 70-200 f2.8L USM lens and not my f4, so I bought one last week and am selling the other on ebay. I got the shots, but I would have got more with the extra apeture. Perhaps next year I can persuade Andy that I need a MkIII

Re: My Trip to Manchester Velodrome
Thank you. It's only my second time at the velodrome and only in public areas, although I couldn't have asked for a better place to stand on the banking, I was standing with Bradley Wiggins wife and family, so was well placed for some shots of him waving. Some of our local riders are planning a trip to Newport Velodrome for some riding later in the year, so I'm going with them and can go where I want so can get track center.

Re: My Trip to Manchester Velodrome
Thanks charlotte, the lighting is a bit tricky to balance in there, lots of tungsten light & flash. Strange mix.

Re: My Trip to Manchester Velodrome
Then you did an excellent job in the awkward lighting
I've been reading up on sports photography - although I haven't actually done any (yet) - and tungsten/mixed lighting seems to be a recurring factor which sports photographers have to battle with. I say again, these are high-grade shots, well done |
